The sugar works but we just let the cat clean the bowls instead :-)

    Umm ....

I made super hydrophobic surfaces using tetra-ethyl orthoxy silane on glass surfaces back in the 1980s.
The ones at MIT might be super super hydrophobic or ridiculously hydrophobic or even ludicrously hydrophobic :-)

Is this the same compound currently being painted on ships hulls, graffiti prone areas and Hamburgs public urination spots? Read somewhere that it costs $500 per sq meter.

....much of what we buy never makes it out of the container and is instead thrown away — up to a quarter of skin lotion, 16 percent of laundry detergent and 15 percent of condiments like mustard and ketchup.

I eat oats (porridge) regularly, and noticed many years ago how sticky and messy the bowl ends up when you are finished........unless.... You sprinkle a little sugar on the hot porridge and let it "melt" .
the liquified sugar miraculously gets in between the oats and the bowl resulting in a separate "blob" of oats sliding around in a slippery bowl which is totally clean (other than a liquid sugar coating) when you have finished.
....of course you still have to wash the bowl so the effect is not of any real benefit...but hey !, the oats taste good !

Very neat. Those guys at MIT are really producing innovative tech with their research income. I want Heinz to license it for their tomato sauce bottles.
