Download and install this : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version :- Malwarebytes | Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free

The free version is a stand-alone scanner and is one of the best paid or free programs for detecting and removing malware.

Only the paid version gives real-time protection, but the free one may give you a 30 day free trial which you can choose to accept or not during installation.

The free version doesn't update automatically, but this is quick and easy to do just before you run it.

SuperAntiSpyware is another good program with similar features and also gets good detection and removal scores at the test labs.

Agree, an appopriate level of geekiness is a prerequisite to get the most out of MSE and it's low overhead. Not for everybody.

Remove "Hot Deals!" pop-up ads (Virus Removal Guide)

MS Security Essentials provided good protection when it was first launched about 5 years ago but receives low to average reviews. I was advised to go for something better.

Goodbye Microsoft Security Essentials: Microsoft Now Recommends You Use a Third-Party Antivirus
"...Holly Stewart, the senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, said that Microsoft Security Essentials was just a “baseline” that’s designed to “always be on the bottom” of antivirus tests. She said Microsoft sees MSE as a first layer of protection and advises Windows users to use a third-party antivirus instead."

Microsoft Security Essentials covers a lot of bases. A daily basic scan and a weekly full scan with live protection works well for me.

    Malware "Ads by GreatDeals'

I haven't had any computer woes for years now...but since yesterday have had this one "Ads by Greatdeals' put a pop-up page or two every time I click on anything whilst on the net. I can't think who would look at one of these annoyances and think..."Gees...that looks good! I'll get one of those!"

    I have Windows 7 installed.

Does anyone have any proven way of getting rid of this pesky varmint?

    Cheers,
    Paolo
