Far from a new idea though!
Sand heaters are the most authentic method of making Turkish coffee.
I tried to buy some domestic sized ones a few years ago but had trouble getting them certified for Australian sale, pity, I might give it another go one day.
I used one of the smaller sand heaters at the Turkish coffee championships in Maastricht in 2011, it took an hour or so to get up to stable temperature but once there it was quick and easy to use although not at the high temperature of the one you have linked in the video.
