Caution: If you dont work in retail this thread may offend you.

I know Im still just a noob on these boards but I thought this kind of thread would stir some conversation with those in the ranks of retail trade. Im lucky enough to work in the in the wonderful sub category of Business IT retail.. which means I sell computers, servers and other computer releated gear to the business market and a small percentage to the home user market .. (usually on the weekends). For obvious reasons its probably wise not to mention where you work in this thread.. this thread is more intended to be a place for those of us in retail to vent. If you work in retail of any kind .. face to face or on the phone .. you know all to well that people ask really stupid questions .. do really stupid things and generally just behave like children when they dont get there way .. I know youve got stories .. so vent away.

My most recent story happened this morning.. a guy walked in and asked us if we sold fan belts for cars.. (were a computer shop) .. I said no and the guy walked out .. everyone else in the shop burst into laughter.

Good idea for a thread but I will keep a benevolent eye on it so it doesnt degrade into any thing defamatory or slanderous!

You dont have divulge the name of your shop but does it even come close to giving someone the impression that you sell car parts!? LOL! That was very funny, could just picture the look on everyones face even when the potential customer asked!

Im in the hospitality game so we get to see all kinds of stupid things happening! Probably the most frustrating thing about it though is the customers who always seem to have a knack at leaving things to the very last minute!

On Friday, before closing, the baker was giving me a hand to clean up. He asked if we could clean out the pie warmer. I said sure, anyone who comes in at ten to five for a pie needs their head read anyway...

Yep, sure enough, a customer walked in, looked at the empty pie warmer and said "Have you got a pie?" He got the one that had fallen off the rack onto the bottom of the warmer...

Similar story from many years ago (early 80s) when I worked in a bank (they sell money).

We were moving premises before demolition and rebuild.
It was a Saturday afternoon and the Accountant and a few of us were having a breather from packing.
The place was a mess as the builders had already started some preliminary taking apart of little things like removing fans and heaters from the walls etc.

To further set up the scene it had been many, many years since a bank had been open on a Saturday and we were all in jeans and T-shirts.

This place was the longest branch in the country and I was sitting on the counter way down almost to the end.

Anyhow, out of the corner of my eye I spots a bloke walking in.
Quick as a flash I guess whats happening and say to the Accountant (just as the guy reaches the counter) "Bill, I think this ones for you".

It turns out I was right, the guy asked if he could exchange some foreign currency into Aussie dollars.
(He wasnt obviously a tourist - no accent - seemed to be a local).

It took Bill a good 5 minutes to convince the guy we werent open for business. ;D

Idiocy is not confined to retail. I used to work at Water Police and during dry spells with water restrictions in force we had more than 5 calls a day informing on neighbours flouting restrictions.

Lol .. now that is funny.

Early last year it took me about the same amount of time to explain to a customer that we really didnt sell toasters .. and why. :

haha after many years in public retail I feel for you

I made the switch to still a retail job but dealing with a different customer base, so instead of the average joe that knows nothing but thinks hes an exprt I now get to deal with people with a bit of paper that says they are an expert but dont know what they want

I dont know if I made a good choice or not :s

any sponsors got a good story to tell

Hey I feel you .. we get people in here who are supposed to be the heads of there IT department asking basic networking questions that a head of IT should know. Prosumer or home user .. its rare either way to get someone whos actually researched what they want. I always say an informed consumer is much less likely to be unhappy with there purchase.

I used to deal with "Hairdressers" and the Owners of the Salon in regards to there POS (Point Of Sale) system... Oh the stories...

Ask the user to press "Enter" and they type "Enter" - Um, nothing is happening. One of many many stories..

                    Problem: My Printer doesnt print..
Solution: So I visit them onsite and find a small pencil jammed in the paper tray... I try sooo so hard not to burst out in laughter

Ill share some more when I think of them...

Thank God Ive moved on to Corporate IT systems... thats another barrel of laughs at times...

Re: The official "I work in retail" Support Group

I used to work in the building equip[ment industry repairing water pumps, and amomg other things, concrete vibrators (for settling wet concrete).

Emblazoned on the side of the company truck was "Vibrator Hire and Service".

When there were large building projects in the eastern suburbs in the early 80s the phones would run hot with enquiries from all the houses of ill repute! True! ;D ;D ;D

I have since been working in IT for the last 18 years fixing EDP, POS, low end servers, PCs and ATMs and have found the best tool for training idiot customers is an invoice book.

                      Mine is the Power Bwooohahahahahah

Ah the joys of working in customer service

I wish we could still manually invoice, I loved those days,
seeing the faces on unsuspecting ID-Ten_T operators and it was just theraputic in an odd kinda way. Deal with idiots then write em an invoice, all better!

Yesterday at work, customer came in and ordered coffee. Whilst standing there at the machine, proceeded to tell me that the coffee that came out of machines like that did not taste like coffee. So I asked what did taste like coffee then, to which the reply was "percolated coffee tastes like coffee." What the...??

Oh and then asked if we used the coffee grinds that were on the grinder that hadnt made it into the portafiller. To which I replied a resounding "No!".
