Yesterday at work, customer came in and ordered coffee. Whilst standing there at the machine, proceeded to tell me that the coffee that came out of machines like that did not taste like coffee. So I asked what did taste like coffee then, to which the reply was "percolated coffee tastes like coffee." What the...??

Oh and then asked if we used the coffee grinds that were on the grinder that hadnt made it into the portafiller. To which I replied a resounding "No!".
ROFL .. what a bright spark .. thats freakin hilarious.. I would not have been able to stop myself from laughing at him.
Yeah, I had to walk away out the back after that one left... ;D

      Hi all,

I used to work at a car spare parts retailer and have so many good stories but these two I will always remember. One day a lady came in to top up her oil so we sold her a 4ltr bottle to top it back up. About 10 mins later she came back and said that she had put the bottle in and had came back in and grabed another bottle, put that in as well and wanted to know how much more was needed to get it to the top of the oil filler cap. She left with the tow truck.

Another time a guy came and brought a battery for his old holden and fitted it in the car park and put the terminals around the wrong way and melted all the wires in the engine bay he also left with a tow truck.

Hmmm, Scoota, you just reminded me why I found working in a cafe a lesson in patience! I used to get very tired of customers complaining that their coffee wasnt hot enough. "I drink it much hotter than this at home". Thats because youre making it with boiling water, and a spoonful of brown dust!!!

I once had a customer ask me to microwave the hot chocolate Id just made for her. I made her a new one (in a super-heated cup, no way was I serving scalded milk) instead, and she complained about me!!

And then, of course, everyones favourite... "I want an extra-hot, weak, decaf, cappuccino on low-fat soy with extra froth and chocolate"...

I shudder at the thought, ugh!

Im not in retail but still get some real idiots. Ive never seen so many people have trouble opening doors. If youve seen the far side cartoon: school for gifted children with pull sign on door an the kid pushing; this is something like that.

We have a double set of doors with a PULL sign on the one that opens (LH door). The door also has a sign "For after hours access (after 8 pm, before 7 am) please press buzzer to gain admittance".

I would say that a third of our customers PUSH the right hand door, then PULL it, then push the left hand door, before pressing the buzzer (during the day). We then press the intercom and state "the door is already unlocked/open, PULL the left hand door". Mind you a frequent number of these people actually come in a number of times a week/month and should know better.

Okay - I will admit to pushing a door instead of pulling sometimes :-/ :-/

I just thought it was one of those things.

When I was doing a lot of karate I was also known to bow at the door before entering and leaving, answering Hai when spoken to and various other stuff much to the amusement of friend and family who were with me. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, but I doubt youd do it if you came in 3 times a day for weeks on end! - Painful.

I used to refer to them as a "why bother?"...

Youd be surprised how many people order weak and decaf in the same cup- I often wondered if they would notice if I simply failed to put any espresso in the cup at all...

Re: The official "I work in retail" Support Group

It annoys me when you get people who have no idea what a mocha is and cant tell the difference between it and a cino.

Customer: "I will have a Mochacinno please"
                    Me:  :-?
Me: "Sorry, are you after a Mocha or a Cuppuccino?"
                    Customer: "A Mochacinno"
Me: "They are actually 2 different coffees. Do you want chocolate in it or not?"
Customer: "Yes the chocolate on top"
                    Me:  :
Me: "So you are after a Cuppuccino?"
                    Customer: "Thats what I said"
                    Me: *sigh*

The other thing is the "extra hot" request. This annoys me the most. Customers dont seem to understand the logistics of milk heating.
Those who work with customers and who get this request, how do you handle it?

I often tell them that it will be their responsibility if they burn themselves, as our guidelines are between 60* and 70*...to me I think that is WAY too hot.

Could you get away with telling them that ever since that notorious court case where McDonalds was sued because a customer was burned with hot coffee, that you are now only allowed to warm it by holding the cup with both hands for a minute to take the chill off?

I just nod and smile and say "Sure. I can do that." Just remember the adage that the customer is always right! So if they want it really hot, heat the milk up to 70 degrees but make sure that the cup is also hot! Heat it up and heat up that handle as well! I think that that is the best way to treat those customers.

If they want it hot, you can always pull the shot, top with milk to 3/4 then finish with hot water to bring it back up to temp. Sort of like a long black cappa.
