Re: The official "I work in retail" Support Group

Um...Where can I buy some virtual memory?

That aside, we had someone ask us if we use risotto rice in the risotto. Our reply: "We use Arborio rice in our risotto." Their response: "Is that risotto rice?" Apparently the last time they were in (previous owner, before my time), they were served risotto that had non-risotto rice in it.

Went out for a spports club dinner a couple years back and all the food was finger food.

Was served sushi that was made with long grain rice and not even dressed with the appropriate dressings for sushi, was dry and disgusting.

Any half decent chef/cook should at least know how to use the appropriate ingredients or find out how to make it properly. There are people in the general public who know how to make such things authentically, and we do have a right to ask if the right ingredients are used. They had a few weddings that night so I guess we werent the priority.

I dont know why it took me so long to post here, most of the good stories have left my head already.

My favorite though, it happens no less than 5 times everyday.
Our roastery is in a tourist industrial estate. Across the road is a ginger factory and next door is a macadamia factory. People walk in, look around, come to the counter and say "where are all the nuts" or "is this the nut factory" to which we reply "no its next door" customer says "oh, you arent very well signed" or "but the lady at the ginger factory said it was across the road. By the way this is our street frontage before we put out 2 A-frame signs and 6 branded umbrellas:

Had a good one today, 1 minute past closed and we had just started closing. Lady walks in and asks if its ok to have a coffee, sure. She asks for a extra hot skinny cappucino with an espresso on the side. Me: so a cap and an espresso, $5.50. She says " no, just the milk for the cap in the cup and the espresso for the cap on the side because I want to control the stregnth myself" Me: "Oh ok, sure, take a seat and Ill bring it over for you". (I have heard stranger requests than this). Customer: "Thats ok, Ill wait, I want to see how you pour latte art" Me: "Um, I wont be able to pour latte art if there is no coffee in the cup" Customer "oh, well (condescending tone) my usual barista in melbourne does it for me" Me, "I can do some etching with the chocolate on top" Cusomer: *sigh* "I dont like etching, just dont bother" Me: serves coffee, runs into kitchen, laughs my ass of.

My father-in-law had an embarrassing experience in cafe once (gday Kev!). He was with a mate & ordered a cap. Had a few sips, took it back to the counter and complained that it had a distinctively "salty" taste, & could the barista make him another one. Sure, no worries - and another was on its way. 2nd time around, the barista came over, and personally gave him his new cap. Then the barista started to laugh. "Whats up", ol Kev said. The barista pointed to the 3 opened & empty sachets of salt sitting on the table as the probable reason why the 1st coffee tasted the way it did! Yep, Kev thought he was pouring sugar into his brew. ;D

Suffice to say, dad-in-laws nickname from that point has been, you guessed it, "Ol Salty" 8-)
