  • Good DVD Recorder/Player for LG HD LCD

Hi all - I know that there would be plenty of people here who know about these things. I have an LG 32 Inch LCD HD TV and my JVC DVD died. I am considering a recorder, but a player might see me through. The LG screen is 1028 x 768 or thereabouts - 8ms. Its a nice screen and I would like to get the most out of the DVDs. I wouldnt get any use out of blue ray I dont think given that the tele is not 1028 in the other direction.

I dont really want to spend more than $600 for a recorder and probably $250 for a player only.

    Cheers

      ozscott,

pretty much any DVD player which has "Component" output and optical audio will provide a signal of sufficient quality to match your HD television - and that is pretty well all of them (including a cheapie DVD player and SD set top box combo I bought for $100). The tuner in it wouldnt be adequate for the TV however.

DVD recorders are a different proposition..... the quality depends on how the signal is recorded to disc. There are some HD DVD recorders on the market - but had nothing to do with those (cant justify the cost - unlike for coffee equipment ;D ;D) so cant offer any suggestions.

Thanks mate - I have a view at present that the recorders are still too new to be good value - in a year or 2 they will be a lot cheaper I suspect. I think for now I will buy a player at the lower end and go that way.

        Cheers

Yep, thats also how I figure it....

You need a recorder with a HD digital tuner and with adequate processing power to record the program to disc (hard disc or direct to DVD) in a high res mode..... and whilst there are some around, because the uptake of digital TV has been slow...... their price is still quite high.

SD recorders have come down quite a bit but once we all have to use digital tuners the price of both will plummet.... and the features will also be far better.

Ill be waiting a year or two (I remember buying a video recorder when it first came out..... it was about $1000 and very basic - but in its defence - it still works - unlike several others Ive bought since!!!)

Yep - I have a built in HD tuner in the TV. I have just realised my tele has a HDMI input so I might mooch up to the 496 Pioneer player that has HDMI output. Its a shame about my expensive component cables that I purchased a while back - they wont get a go! I run an optical cable from the television back to the surround sound, so all up it should be a nice player. The player is about $140.

            Cheers matey

For just a little bit more money, you can get a little media centre PC. Which is really the way to go these days. You get your DVD player/burner, the ability to record programs to the HD, thus saving you some DVDs.

Thanks all...I picked up the Sony DVPNS76H, which is very cool bit of kit. The upscaling is seamless and brings out a fantastic picture in even older scratched DVDs.

                    Cheers

                    PS. Good guys - $165!!!

Yep, this is what I use... Although still on a Tube TV, the Quality is awesome. I have the Video out through S-Video into the TV. A 250G SATA second HHD handles the storage for me. And my my music as well, all running through my Yamaha Receiver ;-) Got the PC real cheap (P4 2.6g, although a 2.8 would be better), bought a HDTV Card and the 250g HHD and I was away... and you can edit your recordings if you so desire... And dont get caught up in the MS Media Centre XP, you can use MediaPortal on top of XP Pro.

recurve boy is correct, Media Centre PCs are the way.

If you were to get a DVD recorder, Id make sure its DVD-RAM capable... those Disks can handle 30,000 rewrites!

                      My 5cents worth

Thanks Marc...I will remember this when its tiime for a DVD recorder. I dont generally have too much to record from TV. I usually buy or use Shrink or DVD Decrypter to copy. The PC centre seems like the way to go in the future. For now I like having a good player and on the LG LCD the quality with the Sony and HDMI with upscaling is amazing...Im blown away by the crispness and colour. It like stepping up again from the LCD which itself was a massive step up for me from a 12 year old small CRT.

                        Cheers
