It's a shame their update process seems to be bug ridden as the Windows 10 kernel is (IMO) the best they have ever produced!

Still not enough to sway me back to MS, I am a 'nix man through and through!

Ok. Back to Windows XP then. Or 98........

    On a somewhat related note...
I'm not all that excited that Microsoft just take over your computer when they decide to download their 'updates'.
I have had an annoying week of failed MS 10 updates that take control of my computer and then just leave it in limbo when the update fails at 91% after about 8 hours.
The only option is to pull the power. My computer geek son tells me he has now disabled the "update process" and that is the way it will stay unless MS can "un-disable" it.
You would think that they would have a process where a failed update would either diagnose the problem OR at least stop trying to repeat the failed update.
There is nothing remotely unusual about my 2 yo bog standard DELL laptop, so if i am having problems there must be a lot of others as well.
I have always hated MS because of their crappy programming but have stayed with them only because I have support readily to hand.

If we knew half of what went on with our browsing being tracked, I think we would all shut down right now.

    Grrrr.

I have heard people with iPhones say that they have been talking about something and then get targeted adds for it. Implying that their phones are listening. Some apps always run the microphone to give faster start up times but they claim they don't do anything with the info captured.
I've messed about trying to teach myself machine learning for the past couple of years. I recall one competition on Kaggle where the client was looking to identify people across devices by matching their web browsing patterns - without IP addresses or cache.

Very common 'feature' now for social media websites and apps to read your browser cache content to tailor advertising accordingly, if you 'log in' to a particular flavor of browser (such as Firefox or Chrome) then it is also likely your browser profile contains metadata that would feed advertising widgets and the like.

Not sure about voice biometrics though (as in listen to your phone calls and then tailor advertising based on the content), pretty sure that breaches a bunch of privacy laws without appropriate pre-authority (such as a warrant)?

Adblocker is a must these days if you want to browse the internet without being inundated with advertisements.

A lot of sites will now notice that you have an adblocker enabled and either give a pop up asking for you to switch of the adblocker (so they make ad revenue) or in some cases, lock you out of the site until you disable the adblocker.

I usually switch off adblock for my favourite youtube channels and their videos so they get the ad revenue but otherwise leave it on for everything else.
