Ah, Asimov. I read most of his works in my teens/twenties and I remember that particular short story because of the wonderful ending that brought a smile to me today, just as it did more than forty years ago.

I am not completely familiar with the golden age of science fiction's theories on the subject Tampit. The pertinent phrase and caveat in the article is "causal gymnastics" which I assume is referring to control theory - another mind boggler.

Heinlein's "All you Zombies" remains the ultimate time travel paradox for me. Right up there with "Let there be light" - either Asimov's "Last Question" or the religious original. Oh, and none of those needed a computer to work out the logic.

Pity about the butchered film they did of Heinlein's effort.

If genes manipulation existed then there would be no need to recreate Marty biologically as gene manipulation could be used to create him.

As the paradox is based on biological reproduction, the paradox itself is no longer valid.

If we are/were able to time travel, gene manipulation via whatever method (CRSIPR for instance) even "on the fly" what be accounted for surely?

The first solution (Marty having sex with own grandmother) isn't possible because the offspring will need to maintain the entire set of genes from the father (ie Marty) and not a combination of genes from both the parents which is impossible.

I couldn't be arsed understanding the 2nd solution.

Great read that one Java, the boundless arguments about the simulation hypothesis and similar theories were re-invigorated by this research. It's a real mind bender when digging deeper.
