A new thread for the discussion presently going on in the Niche forum.

For those interested in a couple of 'different' gins, the Hartshorn from Tasmania (made with sheep's whey) and the Pretty Parrot from Tumut (or nearby) are very much worth a try.

After all these new craft breweries opened in recent years , it seems the latest trend is to open a gin distillery. Grand Vewe Cheeses had a lot of leftover sheeps whey and thought, let's make a vodka and a gin from it; good luck to them!

Gin... really 'aint my thing but while in the very south of Tassie a couple of years ago I came across a few interesting little distilleries that had a whole range of gins and if you asked nicely with a secret handshake they also had some hidden whiskey / whisky / bourbon concoctions too but these were typically just for staff use and one place actually took me to the barrel room and we sampled a few whisky's direct from the barrels in a port sipper. Great fun climbing over all the barrels to see what we could find under the stoppers.

When I queried why all the interest in gin I was told that it was a way faster turn around, from still to bottle in a couple of days without all the hassle, storage and time required to age in oak casks. Process was bang-out some ethanol, infuse a "tea bag" and tada... "speciality gin".

Juniper, cloves, cinnamon, citrus and a host of other Christmas cake flavours were used but the couple of year old char barrel whiskey was way better for my taste and if the staff don't drink it all will be better again in a few more years.

With summer approaching I think it’s time I found myself a good Sloeberry gin. Just need to work out which one to get.

Try Monkey 47 if you can find some.

When it comes to gin I'm very much a traditionalist, my preference is for London Dry with Juniper as the dominant flavour, brands I enjoy are Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire and Bols Genever.

Have tried a couple of the Australian offerings, I find them overpriced and perfumey, they simply don't suit my Palate, when you've been accustomed to a particular taste over many years I guess its probably a given that anything that doesn't pass your taste test expectation won't be to your liking, very much like espresso, I established my preferences long ago and have no desire to change, call me a rusted on tragic, I really don't mind.

Favorite spirit based summer drink is gin and tonic with a slice of lime and lots of ice in a long glass.

I love it in summer, especially as a “Negroni”
Gin/Campari/Red Vermouth on ice with a slice of orange.

If you can get it I would highly recommend Brookies Slow gin - otherwise Plymouth sloe gin is not bad.

You should give Never Never distilling co a try - Juniper is the focus of their gins. Try the triple juniper - i think its great. Strong piney flavors from the juniper.

                            "That tastes like bilgewater".

Well you can actually get a Bilgewater gin. Found it on a recent cruise in Scotland. Here's the story.

"Smaller cruise companies are also surfing the gin wave. Just over 20 years ago, the founders of Scotland’s Majestic Line, Dr Ken Grant and Andy Thoms, were horrified when a certain big-name gin brand reduced its strength from 40 per cent ABV to 37.5, in their opinion (and mine) ruining the product. So they set about producing their own, and the quaintly named Bilgewater is now the gin of choice for discerning drinkers on all Majestic sailings (cruising the coast of Scotland in a stylishly converted fishing boat while sipping Bilgewater is proving very popular indeed)."

Managed to slip a few Bilgewaters in between the single malts on offer. And the cruise was as good as it sounds.

Yeh, finished one of their's recently (not sure whether it was triple). I liked it but was pretty pricey for a 500ml bottle.
