  • The ABC moves even further to the left.

Now the ABC is asking us to become a nation of snitches via " SecureDrop"
and in the process moves even further to the left.

I'm sick to death of the worn out phrase "The ABC can reveal" its become a platform for whingers and bludgers.

They even offer a cheat sheet on how to do a whack job without getting caught.

"What should I know before submitting material through SecureDrop?

To protect your anonymity when using SecureDrop, it is essential that you do not use a network or device that can easily be traced back to your real identity. Instead, use public wi-fi networks and devices you control.
    • Do NOT access SecureDrop on your employer’s network.
    • Do NOT access SecureDrop using your employer’s hardware.
    • Do NOT access SecureDrop on your home network.
    • DO access SecureDrop on a network not associated with you, like the wi-fi at a library or cafe."

Depends on whether you believe the Fourth Estate is a pillar of our democracy and whether it's role is slowly being eroded

Journalism is now a shadow of its former self, Sinatra got it right when he refereed to Journo's as pimps and hookers.

Nowadays it seems the major skills a journalist needs is the ability to cut and paste along with a good imagination.

As my first post suggests, they want the stories handed to them on a plate, investigative journalism?

Things are really moving in a scary direction these days. "Innocent until proven guilty" is but just a distant memory since Anti-Social media has become the Court of the People.

RSI is sure to resurface as a major health issue with so much finger pointing going on these days. The ABC is but a shadow of it's former self and has been well and truly hijacked. Maybe it is time to withdraw funding unless a more balanced point of view is enforced for what is a publicly funded media organisation, funded by all people, not just the left and those obsessed with political correctness.

You're venturing into dangerous territory here Yelta but do try to get your facts right.
"Fourth Estate" is not an Americanism . Google it.
The press has often relied on public tipoffs and whistleblowers as sources. All media organisations across the globe share this need but they also like to protect their sources. This is what SecureDrop offers.

Thanks for bringing some balance back into this Steve...

Agree. There have been some quite recent and very disturbing issues brought into the public domain by the ABC, greyhound racing, horse racing, aged care
There are some exceptions, Murdoch for one, however for me the ABC is doing a fantastic job, onya Ita.

This thread reminds me of the old chestnut about democracy - of all forms of gov't it is the worst - it just happens to be better than all the others.

I note there are very few calls complaining about the warmongering "right wing nut jobs" of NewsCorp / Fox. There is no way "J Dubya" would have been able to go into Iraq were it not for the continuous pogrom from Murdoch et al. The US media's own figures were 3,500 mentions per week of the "Axis if Evil" (Iran / Iraq / Syria, later Nth Korea was added) on US media for over 18 months before the illegal invasion of Iraq. Utter public brain washing an a scale Hitler would be proud of. It actually gets worse - 35% of the US population in 2004 believed that the US had actually found the "weapons of mass destruction" that Saddam Hussain supposedly had. So the pogrom was pretty effective in persuading people about an utter lie and even convincing them that the invasion was needed. No wonder the US banned the BBC production of "The power of nightmares" - the story of how the media got "J Dubya" into power. Probably the same way they got Trump in more recently.

I agree ABC has been smashed by "no funding cuts to the ABC or SBS" of Tony Abbot - who then ripped the guts out their budget. The next two PMs (at the time of writing) did not redress that.

I also note that the raids on journalists homes / ABC offices is a good way of trying to silence whistleblowers. After all, this gov is one of the least transparent ever - but that is OK, with God on their side they do not need to play by the rules of fair play - just ask them. Then ask yourself how we know about a lot of their dirty tricks? No independent media and we may as well be an ostrich.

I ceased listening to radio years ago, and never was a fan of Red Symons on ABC breakfast radio...

Nonetheless, the ABC does move in mysterious ways sometimes.

In a bizarre decision, Symons was dumped without explanation two years ago even though his ratings had peaked at 17, and was then Melbourne's most popular radio breakfast host. Ratings were around 12 when he left.

He was replaced with Jacinta Parsons and Sammi Shah, the ratings took a dive down to 8.

Last Thursday they were also been sacked from the breakfast program and replaced with Sammy J.

What does this tell us? That the reason behind his sacking was not rating driven, but possibly to be politically correct.

That if it aint broke, is humming along nicely, don't try to fix it and up up well and truly smashing it.

                      Hi all

Good that the ABC has teamed up with other journalists and organisations to use SecureDrop. Developed by Aaron Swartz, based on open source, its able to be audited, trusted, and supported by a non-profit organisation.

If people don't like SecureDrop and the lefty ABC they can get on the phone and whinge with Alan Jones and Ray Hadley and their ilk. :-)

If you watch it in a mirror it looks like it’s moving to ‘the right’.
