  • Just Not Tennis Or...

Just watched Monfils commit an underarm serve - which he won. No censure at all from the commentators.
Just not cricket or all's fair in love, war & sport?

It is not the equivalent of an underarm delivery in cricket. It's up to the returner to be awake and not standing with the line judge.

Kyrgios has been chucking quite a few out lately, not against the rules at all, just not very common.

Yeh, Michael Chang used to do it quite a bit for a while back in the day.

At the time of the "underarm bowling incident" on the 1st of Feb 81 it wasn't against the rules either. The aim of any sport is to win - within the rules. Any sportsperson who gives anything less is a cheat, IMHO. It's not a popularity contest, it's an acceptable substitute for war.
If sport becomes gentrified, how are we to then scratch that particular primitive itch?

Yeah I was actually wondering that myself of late...

It's technically a legal serve, as it still makes it into the appropriate area, but have a feeling it may be frowned upon by some. I reckon it's a little cheeky [emoji14]

That being said, have seen a few done by Kyrgios and no one has said anything negative about it.
