  • The Formula One Thread

Is it possible we don't have a dedicated "Formula One" thread on here?
I did a search (I'm a pretty useless searcher) and couldn't find anything.

I was getting my 2020 F1 Diary ready the other day and after I'd finished, I thought "Hang on - will any of these GPs run (a) at all or (b) on the date scheduled."
I'm guessing the Australian GP will happen on the 15th March, but China on the 19th April? Italy and Japan are late in the year.

There's a massive F1 thread over at the Whirlpool boards if that's the kind of discussion you're seeking. I won't post a direct link as I think that's against site rules (or at least the spirit of them) but I figure most ppl are familiar with Whirlpool.

Thanks Herzog. Just introducing another discussion option here as most other Forums seem to have a standing F1 Thread.
If no interest it will just pass on quietly.

China's already been "postponed' (potentially indefinitely) I believe. Big question mark over Vietnam. The Italian F1 teams potentially requiring quarantine is the latest thing being discussed. Methinks there'll be some major disruption this year. I've also seen a headline that MotoGP may consider racing behind 'locked gates' this year to combat the risk!

A couple of years back I was watching a replay of the 2010 Monaco GP, and was thinking 'geez this is a slow pit stop, that'll compromise the race for sure' during a 5 to 6 second stop. The commentator said something like 'that was a quick stop', which put into perspective just how much quicker they have become over the last decade. it's an impressive workrate!

Yep, the support crews are at least as well-tuned as the cars themselves...

              Mal.

I've just started watching the very entertaining Netflix "Drive to Survive" series about F1 (starting with the 2018 Season).
In the first couple of episodes one of the incidents involved the mis-attachment of a wheel in two successive pit-stops to (I think) Magnussen's car.
It illustrated to me just how much pressure is on everybody in the Pit Crew in a 2-3 second pit stop.
You wouldn't want to suffer from 'performance anxiety'.

The level of R&D is out of control - I believe the teams use helium to run the air guns as it has superior qualities for changing wheels as fast as possible when compared to straight compressed air. Probably only worth a tenth of a second, but in this game that can mean a lot. The Netflix show is a great window into the sport, although it is a bit dramatised. The added-on sound effects during crashes annoys me a bit.

I remember in Mark Webber's early days I thought he seemed to be a pretty boring bloke - it wasn't until he was on Top Gear (for the first time) that I saw his true personality for the first time. Turns out I had only previously seen him on Australian media where 99% of the time the people knew little to nothing about the sport and he must have just been sick of all the stupid questions. The Netflix show has been a good series delving into the soap opera aspect of the F1 circus. The new owners appear to be taking F1 in the right direction, if Bernie Ecclestone was still involved I reckon everyone would be talking about the death of F1 by now.

If you have Netflix, don't miss the very last minute of the last episode, hyping up the 2021 season.

                    Just wait for Kimi... :-)

A really excellent series. We watched season one last year and loved it and the behind the scenes footage really showed the politics and personalities that you don't get to see via the commentators during a race. Certainly explained why a lot of the driver shuffles happen.

Have just finished season 2 and it's every bit as good and we still dislike the same people

We are not really into F1, lost interest years ago when it was just a procession but certainly admire the engineering and now the cutting edge aero. Driving one of those at that lap pace, that close to the wall is insane lap after lap.

DRS has certainly improved the racing allowing a shuffle in the order all the way through the pack and now with stricter spending limits maybe the field will bunch-up a little more. It's nearly watchable again

Mercedes Dual Axis Steering (DAS) will be very interesting to see in a race and although it's been banned for 2021 they can use it this year. Changing the toe/camber in real time at that pace is certainly going to make the Merc guys busy, it also has the potential of changing the aero and could act like a mini version of DRS. I suspect when the drivers find the sweet spot it will make the Merc uncatchable.

Vietnam participating in Formula One? It wasn't that long ago we were over there killing these people. I marvel at their capacity to forgive.

Ps maybe something to consider the next time we have an ideological disagreement with another country.

It's Vietnam's debut on the calendar this year. Might be another flash in the pan event that comes & goes like (South) Korea & Turkey did, however as mentioned above I believe the new owners have a little more modern (and sustainable) business savvy compared to the previous maverick owner Bernie Ecclestone.

F1 has a history of reaching across the wounds of war; its first season was 1950 with major participation between countries that were killing each other (and their own) en masse less than a decade earlier.

There's a bit of info about the Hanoi Circuit on the F1 website. It is seemingly comprised of predominately street circuit with some added bits that are fixtures - possibly the start/finish/Pits areas.
Bahrain is going to be a "participants only" race and China postponed (indefinitely). I guess more venues will make their intentions clear as they have time to get their heads around the circumstances.
Hard to imagine it won't be chaos this year. Maybe a lot of 'participant only' races would be the practical option. What that does to the financial viability I don't know.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has stated that no fans will be allowed into Albert Park for the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix if the event does indeed continue.

While McLaren Racing has withdrawn from Round 1 of the Formula 1 World Championship, there is still no official word on whether F1 proceedings will take place in Melbourne.

Gates were to have opened at 08:45 AEDT but that was delayed.

“From a public health point of view, the event, if it is to be run – and I’ll leave it to Grand Prix officials, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix organising body to make an official announcement, I think that will happen quite soon – but on public health grounds, there will be no spectators at the grand prix this weekend if a race actually happens at all,” said Premier Andrews in a media conference a short time ago."

                              --------

Wow, let everyone fly into Melbourne, queue-up and then pull the pin with them standing at the gates? Poor form.
