Having traveled by road from Hanoi to Saigon, I would have thought there were far more important issues for Vietnam to address than running a motor race.

        Yep, very poor indeed...
With so many competing self interests, it's a shame that someone didn't step forward much earlier to avoid this sort thing happening. Indecision at its worst.

          Indecision?

I call it poor leadership, so typical of the majority of our politicians.

I was trying to be polite B_L as there is no display of leadership whatsoever...

F1 should have shown leadership in the first instance and called it before putting the whole circus on a plane.

The state government should not have had to make the call. Regardless, it's outright greed at both ends of the court.

Which is the exact same outcome when todays announcement regarding mass gatherings banned as from this Monday.
Not tmrw Saturday the 14th March. Not from the day after Sunday the 15th of March.
But next Monday 3 days time.

Now I AM the biggest sports FAN breathing. full stop.
But jeez the hollowness of this is ridiculous.

Just ban any Game day Stadium crowd as of 12noon today Friday the 13th.

And then suck it up and Refund any ticket purchases for this coming weekends NRL games.
Oh no. State Govt owned Stadiums wouldn't have come into the shallowness of this hypocrisy ?

AND NO there is no brand of politics involved in this statement. I have a very level balanced and equal amount of
                contempt for all sides!

Scotty from Marketing is a massive Cronulla Sharks fan and wanted to attend one more game before it is all shut down.
This has given rise to a new hash tag #Scottygoestothefooty

PS Apparently there is a Hillsong conference on this week which wraps up this weekend. It wouldn't have passed the "events with 500+ people" test

I would suggest the "500 participant" test is simply ridiculous. 20 maybe - if essential.
Any leadership with any pretentions to competence would have banned any and all public gatherings at least a fortnight ago with a weeks grace for organisers to sort out their issues/arrangements as best they could.
We have been able to see where this was all going for at least a month (as I said over a month ago) and the quality of government leadership (and example) has been abysmal.

Exckakery! Authorities should have paid far more attention and scrutiny to all people coming into our country from the time they set up travel bans. Goodness gracious even a Minister travelled back in freely no questions asked.
Fair dinkum sometimes you'd luv to run across the Ole Sarge with the 12 1/2 EE size shoe leather and say hey got a minute !

Even now this country is still probably the only one currently allowing sporting events to be attended .

Was just in Melbourne today, and even though the F1 was cancelled they still had heaps of F1 merch stands around at Federation Square. I think they still got a few sales here and there

                          Indeed Andy !
Ive now heard for the second time publicly that Vettel and Raikkonen both flew out of Melb (independently) during the course of Thurs Evening or early Fri morning !

So what ....was the debate about Friday morning around 8.30 am Friday !
                          The delayed announcement?
What a charade ! It was never going ahead as of Thursday evening.

Maybe the business that now owns the running of these events worldwide, the F1 Group and
its CEO Mr Carey should look past their own needs and place the health of all as a priority.

I see from the F1.com website that they are hosting "F1 esport Virtual GPs"
These involve a 'field' of personalities - some drivers, some celebrities, participating in a mock GP using an F1 computer game.
Competitors for the "Bahrain Virtual GP" are people like Johnny Herbert, Anthony Davidson, Lando Norris, Esteban Gutierrez, Nico Hulkenberg, Jimmy Broadbent, Philipp Eng, Nic Hamilton, Stoffel Vandoorne, Nicholas Latifi, Luca Salvadori, Ian Poulter, Sir Chris Hoy etc.
Some of the competitors have experience with the computer game, others not much.
It is really just a bit of fun and not meant to be any sort of 'substitute' for a real GP.
I plan to give it a look.

Ironic, that just two weeks ago Rocky asked the question about the season while expecting Melbourne to go ahead. Events have moved for us, one might say. Germany is now down to meetings of no more than two people. In the last 24 hours I have twice had people to whom I needed to talk (one wrongly at my door, one a tradie doing some work for us) moving forward as I moved backwards before I reminded them of personal distancing and we kept our two metres. Off the F1 topic there. I hope for some races later in the year. Monaco is gone entirely, others may be postponed.

Funny you should say that bs - I was thinking just that as I quickly scrolled down this page.
How things have moved on in a short time. There's almost a sense of unreality about it all.
The health impacts AND the dire financial/economic consequences that never crossed our minds in January.
A guy on a US forum asked the question "How long do you think it will be for the US to get back to 'normal' post pandemic?".
My thought is that the US will probably take a decade but I seriously doubt that the rest of us will be back to 'normal' in my lifetime - say 15-20 years (based on the fact that it is 12 years after the GFC and most countries economies were still in chaos). There will be so much government and corporate debt, so many companies that have disappeared (and their share value with them) so many private households that have been set-back a decade.
