  • Overtaking Lane Rage

I noticed the trend a year or so ago on the Princess Highway between Traralgon and Bairnsdale where -- to the disgrace of this nation -- one of Australias main highways is undivided.

    Instead, frequent overtaking lanes....
You drive along, stuck behind a slow car doing well under the 100KMH limit.

But as soon as the overtaking lane appears, he plants the foot -- and if you want to overtake, you are forced to break the law and speed.

When the overtaking lane finishes, the slow driver backs off to under 100 again.

This happens with amazing regularity. Its as though the overtaking lane is an invitation for slow drivers to open up. The mere sight of the "overtaking lane ahead" sign gives them a rush of blood.

Totally agree with that one robusto.
Why is it that drivers seem to see the overtake lane and treat it as a dragway or worse, when you have people driving together in convoy they sit beside each other to chat out the window.

And dont get me started on the numbers of people who dont understand the concept of constant speed but rather choose to fluctuate from 80 to 110 and back again. Very frustrating especially on a windy road with few places to overtake. If they sat on 95 or 100 there would never be an issue.

        Re: Overtaking Lane Rage

        I feel your pain, Robusto.

Recently, coming back from my weekend at Bathurst on the bike, I was behind a fairly long and spread out trail of traffic on the Newell hwy between Dubbo and Coonabarabran. There was the usual mix of cars and trucks, including a car towing a van. I have travelled this road a bit, so I kind of know when the overtaking lanes come along. I decided to take the opportunity to overtake most of the vehicles when safe so that I could get up behind the two lead vehicles who were ultimately holding us all up. I figured I was quick at getting around the traffic and once Id got out of the way it would give everyone else a better chance on the overtaking lanes.

Well, the two lead vehicles were big tankers, bogeys as well. I was behind the second one by the time we got to the overtaking lane and by this stage, everyone else had caught us up as well.

You wouldnt believe it but the second truck decided to overtake the first. At below 40km/hr up the hill. I swear, the second truck just sat out on the outside lane for most of the overtaking lane, not actually going faster than the first truck!

You can only imagine my disbelief at their inconsiderate driving. It wasnt only me they held up but everyone else. They were identical trucks with same state number plates and so I figured they were travelling together.

By the time the second truck pulled over, I was fuming! You can be sure I had the Duke wound up by the time I went past his cab and was glad to see his window was down, so that he could get both barrels of the noise of a Ducati reving out over 8 grand! >

I got past no worries. It was everyone else that got held up and missed out! To me that was totally uncalled for and just plain ignorant.

Most truckies out there are great. When they see you coming towards them on a bike they will move over to the verge as close as they can. I always give a wave of thanks for that. When you come up behind, some even flash their blinker when its safe to pass.

But these two guys were just being rude...

If Id been in a car, Id have taken their details. As it was, I flashed past them quickly and tried to forget their infuriating behaviour!

Scootagal, you really wonder about the psychology of some drivers when things like that happen. Rude? Inconsiderate? Dimwits? All the above?

Bolb: Youd think that cruisecontrol would have eliminated that infuriating erratic behavior. I use it constantly -- except when the erratic *&%$# in front of me forces its abandonment.

Cruise control can be really great except on undulating roads where the setup is not as intelligent as it should be and the car thinks you still need to be accelerating at the top or going over the top of the hill.
My wifes truckster (mazda tribute) as this problem but the Honda Type R has great cruise control that you can adjust km by km if required.

Never had that problem on my Fairlanes. Conrol is very sensitive to road conditions. Highway from Melbourne to Gippsland Lakes is fairly straight and flat in any case.

Its because of idiots like these that Ive really enjoyed having my new car. While not as fast as Scoots Duke theres few things on the road that have a chance of preventing it from quickly passing them. Gotta love the feel when 325 horses suddenly get kicked in da azz!! : ;D

Behaviour? Its all relative on the road ... what I react to may differ to yours - hence the unfortunate reality that carnage is inevitable.

                  Too many variables, unfortunately

Id be carefull with that one scooter, allthough they probably like bike riders better, my parents were nearly killed by a truck driver doing that. He gave the signal to pass they pulled out and there was a car right there(100 zone) and dad ended up in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.

Very common on Tassies midlands highway - speed limit 110. Ive topped 140 in an unsuccessful attempt to pass a car that was traveling at 80 for 10km before reaching the overtaking lane!

No problem with people driving at an appropriate speed for the conditions, their car, their level of confidence etc, but speeding up in overtaking lanes is just stupid and selfish behavior.
