Or the blind ones that travel all the way to the end of the merging lane before trying to merge right.
And their close cousins, who tailgate you until the lanes merge and THEN decide to overtake, leaving you with the choice of (a) running into a ditch (b) sideswiping them (c) slamming on the brakes - 100 to zero in two seconds!

Most truckies out there are great. When they see you coming towards them on a bike they will move over to the verge as close as they can. I always give a wave of thanks for that. When you come up behind, some even flash their blinker when its safe to pass.
Id be carefull with that one scooter, allthough they probably like bike riders better, my parents were nearly killed by a truck driver doing that. He gave the signal to pass they pulled out and there was a car right there(100 zone) and dad ended up in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.
Thanks Sarg, I am always careful about that one, I make sure I have a good look and assess for myself if its what Id call safe to go. Even though the bike is quick, its still a pretty long way past a b double or a road train and theyre pretty common out here! And Im especially wary of how much air a truck like that pushes in front of it as on a bike you are so much more susceptible to being buffetted around. Actually, its interesting to see just how far behind them a truck can disturb the air.

I sometimes sit behind a truck to take advantage of that.

If you get past the disturbance you get into a sort of vacuum and get pulled along.
Just like the racing cars do before they slip out to pass.

Im happy sitting there on 100kph using less fuel.

I had the "pleasure" of a drive from Eltham to Yarra Glen yesterday. Roads were fine and so was visibility- a beautiful windless, sunny day. The speed limit variously posted at 60/80 as there are a few curves. So what to we get? A conga line of about 8 cars, bumper to bumper at no more than 60kmh- EVER.

Did the car (daydreamer) up the front ever pull over to let us through? Nup :. There are occasional short opportunities to overtake. Did #2 or #3 go past? Nup. Did any of 4-8 drop back a touch to create a gap? Nup.

A pleasant drive ruined- and lets not talk about youre average Victorian driver in the same sentence as the word courtesy .

              In there only little world.

I pulled into a petrol station on Monday afternoon and the guy in front whod finished paying hopped back into his car, moved forward about 3 feet then decided to rummage around in the front for god knows what, oblivous to the fact that I was behind him and he was blocking all 4 pumps by not moving off.

The fastest I ever went in my old Winnebago (think big box made from 1x2s and alum sheeting on wheels) was drafting a semi with the drivers permission and cooperation. Top end in the beasty on a flat road with no wind and the peddle all the way to the floor was less than 100kph. At that speed fuel consumption was about 2km per liter. Drafting behind the semi we were doing over 150kph and not only was I not giving it any gas, I was actually having to ride the brake to avoid being sucked into the back of the semis trailer! Gas mileage skyrocketed to over 10km per liter. The engine was at idle the whole time and at times the engine was in danger of overheating due to no air flow across the radiator. The only time I had to use any gas was when we hit a hill. Even drafting I couldnt stay in the pocket and the semi driver would slow way down and wait for me to catch up after the hill before speeding back up again.

It was easily the fastest and scariest ride ever in the beastie!!

                  Re: Overtaking Lane Rage

as the owner of a car that can normally quite happily keep to the speed limit on most of the back roads leading from Brisbane to the interesting bush places I would rather be but not have much more to safely overtake anyone that doesnt want to do the speed limit I feel this pain constantly, along with people similar to me that want to tailgate the slower car but not go round so there isnt the room to hop past one at a time

one think I have found with those that speed up in the overtaking lanes, they probably are thinking you are crazy for wanting to go past them, or are too arrogant to think somebody should go faster than them so its best to sneak up on them

sit back a few hundred metres until the overtaking lane comes up then you need to time your attack just right so you are on their rear right at the start of the lane, you zip round before they have a chance to trap you, works every time

                    Re: Overtaking Lane Rage

With the 4 litre Falcon I dont have to sneak up, just put the pedal to the metal and zoom past.

I cruise on the speed limit at about 2500 RPM.
Idle is 800 and redline about 5500 IIRC.

Opening up the throttle to overtake hits no more than about 3500 RPM. Still a walk in the park for this beast.
Its no V8 but it still has grunt.

I think 265 horespower in the old vernacular.
