  • Four Corners - In the age of AI

You have got to watch this:

    https://www.abc.net.au/4corners/in-t...of-ai/12345178

In the US/Russia Cold War it was largely about military might. This program examines the emerging US/China Cold War via the use of AI. China has stated that it intends to overtake the US in developing AI by 2030. It covers a variety of angles including 'surveillance capitalism' by companies such as Google and Facebook (you thought you were searching Google but Google is searching you). It also examines the increasing use of video surveillance and facial recognition as well as the role of Huawei.

This is the blurb on the ABC website

The ability of machines to ‘think’ at a speed and depth far beyond the capacity of any human is unleashing incredible possibilities.

China is emerging as an AI superpower, staking its reputation on catching up then overtaking America for AI supremacy within the decade.

Critics say the Chinese Communist Party is using AI as an instrument of authoritarian control.

Outside of China, even long-term backers of the tech industry say the rise of the global tech giants is a threat to us all.

Might as well enjoy the ride. It's going downhill too fast to just get off.?

Well, I guess we could stay indoors and not use a computer or smartphone. However, unless you've always done that, it's probably too late.

More than a little concerning, I see major issues in the not too distant future.

The Victorian govt seems to be bending over backward to accommodate the Chinese, perhaps our first communist state, ruled by the CPV.?

I wouldn't go as far as thinking that Victoria will become a Communist enclave.
There is a belief in the West that the Chinese are peddling influence, funding various projects around the world as part of their belt and road initiative. Naturally there is suspicion from western nations about China's motives but there is no sign of the outright colonisation and imperialism displayed by western nations right up to the mid-20thC. It is fair to wonder whether China expects any quid pro quo in return for its investment dollars.
What is certain is that the Chinese Communist Party is authoritarian and AI has given it a means for further control of its citizens.

Unsurprisingly, the "Arab Spring" scare galvanized countermeasures. Sort of like an arms race between the masses and their dictators. Looks like Mr. Ruler For Life has the upper hand - for now.

Watched in on iView while roasting today. Means that it takes me 2 hours to watch a 45 minute show but at least I didn't burn a roast!

Good show, was a bit disappointed that it wasn't really a four corners production and just a rented PBS doco. Plenty of Aussie journalists around to create content, shame "our" ABC resorts to the simple, commercial route. Potentially, there is a better story about AI/USA/CN but it probably needs a third party to do it.

Some was spooky but I sort of liked the idea of those with "low community citizen scores" paying more for the bus. It's about time the good guys got a break.

off topic for this thread but I also watch most of the previous four corners on COVID vaccines, it was interesting and worth a look.

Perhaps if the ABC budget hadn't been slashed over the years by successive governments...and then there's the matter of a pandemic restricting travel .

Lauren Dry who had the "sense of fear and futility" still posed for a photo - Which will help improve the AI and confirms the identity of her and the curly mop headed kid forever archived on the interwebthingy

Wonder how long before a "high community citizen score" is dependant on how well one toes the party line.
