  • Buying a new car

We have decided to get ourselves a new car. Yes a shiny, made in 2007, pretty red NEW car!

My poor old Camira is on her last legs (shes 20 years old!) and last service our mechanic, aka the greek god as dubbed by all our women friends who know him, told us "you really need to start looking for a new car". I suppose when your mechanic tells you to start looking for a new car its time to start looking for a new car ;D

So over the last 6 months I have been checking out whats on the road and have noticed a lot of Mazda 3s. Have asked a few mechanics etc I know and got the great car, good price answer. Have had to have a wee chat with OG who said, "well I am not sure if I want a brand new car" as we have to be able to pay for it, not sure if I want to pay the much yada yada yada.

So OG starts discussing it with his mtes who told him to wait til Jun (yay its june) and get one then at the end of the financial year.

So we approached the bank - and they said , we will give you more money than you are asking for if you want

But we had decided on a set limit (20k). They didnt bring out the rack, thumbscrews, nor consult the "how to torture a loan applicant spanish inquisition guidelines.

    It was scarily easy.

I have found a car, we are off to check it out soon, it is within set spending parameters and the salesman says I should get a good trade in on the camira.

Wow, thats exciting, Lucinda. Nothing like a new car! And youve certainly done your homework and have your figures sorted out. Just be a little sceptical for now about the trade in on the camira - when I traded my 23yo laser in, one place offered me $1. In the end I got a $100 for her.

Doesnt sound as though the trade in figure would blow the budget though, so have fun.

Now is a great time to buy. Every place is looking to offload stock, and will nearly bend over backwards to make the sale.

The biggest thing you want to look at is running costs. Insurance, rego, petrol, maintenance are all ongoing costs, and should be considered more important than sticker price.

Im not one to talk about cars, since Im still driving a 1990 Camry, but you cant go past a Corolla.

        Cool.

Only ever bought 1 NEW car in my life. The last one we got.
It was a Mazda 3 and weve been very happy with it.
They dont tend to move much on price because they are so popular, the car salesmen figure that if they dont sell it to you, there will be someone else along soon enough.

The only haggling room we found was to do with extras.
We managed to get the base model (Neo) with the power pack, cruise control, buttons on the steering wheel for the stereo (and cruise), the car mats and the 10k service included. This may or may not be pretty standard, but if you dont ask, you certainly dont get.

My sister recently got a Mazda 2 and had a similar experience. They got headlight protectors as well but their CD player doesnt do MP3s whereas the Mazda 3 does. I think they got upgraded to a multi CD player, but still doesnt do MP3s. Not important for some, but I thought it was.

        Have fun!

        Brett.

I was thinking the new car thing recently, especially with the foolish fuel costs. Ive decided to get my bike licence soon and get myself a little "please run me over" machine to do the millions of short trips, to hopefully take away from the guzzling my Subi Wagon does.

Good time to buy aparently! Hope it all goes well with the new wheels!

Im a member of a credit union which has a car-buying service. Ive used it twice, the agents do all the dealing. They brought the car to me for looking at and test driving. Both times got a good deal and I still have the car - an unsexy but very reliable Camry.

If you google car buying service you get quite a few hits. This one appears to bhe the biggest http://www.drive.com.au/new/CarBuying.aspx

I have certainly done my homework and took everything into consideration.

Og has never owned a new vehicle in his life, nor have I. They have always been old heaps and it will be nice to have something that
              a) Is looked at twice by nice Mr Policeman
              b) was made this century, not early last century.

Yeeza, A bike is great. I have had my bike license for years.

I actually use public transport or my bicycle although that is getting scary nowadays. Our car is not going to be used for those short trips. OG is back to riding his bicycle to work now. Fuel is just far too expensive.

Mazda is a good car but parts and maintanance is a little high

Toyota Corolla would be my choice but its up to you
drive both and see what you like best

                      Re: Buying a new car

Hey Lucinda, I am a Diesel convert and yes I know diesel is expensive at $180.9 in Melbourne today. But we bought a 2005 Turbo Diesel Rodeo a little over 3 yrs ago to Tow our camper trailer, as my 82 commodore was getting a bit old for Towing and the little pulsar was saying 250,000 on the clock and its never towed anything.
We have had 75,000 trouble free ks and get 820kms out of a tank, 76 litres. So my advice is to have a look at the Hyundai i30 turbo diesel, last years car of the year, it uses less than 5 litres per 100 kms.
Mazda have a great diesel in the 3 but i dont think they have an auto.Have fun shopping and have a look at A current Affairs website they did a special on car buying recently. Here is the link Lucindahttp://aca.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=569865

                          Re: Buying a new car

Yeah sure is Dennis, The goverment wants us to buy more fuel efficient vehicles, so instead of buying a big V8 or V6 we got a diesel. At the time diesel was about 10 cents a litre dearer than unleaded, and you can really see the savings.
But in the last few months you are just breaking even compared to a petrol vehicle, at times theres 25 cents a litre differance in Melbourne. The last 2 weeks petrol has caught up though.
Peolple are saying that the Chinese are buying up all the diesel to build the olympic venues and its forcing up the price.
Another probably useless fact I found being tossed around is that the air in Bejing is so bad the the pollution from modern diesel engines is cleaner than whats going in the engine
