  • Signing up for PayPal?

I sent this query to PayPal and failed to score a reply.

Since PayPal is now an acceptable option for paying for BeanBay purchases, perhaps a CoffeeSnob PayPal user will be good enough to enlighten me.

    The query is this:

Accorfing to PayPal, I need to supply details of my *bank-account* when registering.  Unfortunately, I do my banking with a Credit Union. Does this make a difference? The credit Union does have a BSB Number and, I suspect, a SWIFT Code.

I thought it worth to get some guidance before I louse up a PayPal registration.

Me too Felix, but you need a backup credit card, otherwise it will take about a week to clear the payment.

Credit Union should be fine. I have not registered my bank account (somehow it wouldnt work when PayPal deposited the VERY SMALL triggering amount!!??), I used a credit card instead (with very small limit).
So far Ive had no problems and have bought stuff from private individuals and companies in Canada, USA, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Aus.

I do not use Pay Pal, I refuse to.

If you are in a credit union you would be better off doing a direct transfer from your account to Andys.

I do this al the time without any hassles.

The Credit Unions BSB is fine and I see no reason why it would not be valid.
I think sometimes they just say Bank Account out of habit.

SWIFT codes are for international banking and should not be a concern for yourself setting up Paypal.

I originally set up Paypal with my credit card and added the Bank Account later (when I think it became mandatory). Ive never had any problems with them and they are an absolute boon if you happen to be dealing with other currencies on a sporadic basis. Not the best exchange rate around, but way easier than trying to get your bank to cash a foreign currency cheque.

Everything I would have said Brett (being a former banker and satisfied PayPal user for many years).
And as for the Bank Account thing, yeah, its like saying Esky for any cooler.

I use account transfer too for the same reason.

Its not actually mandatory to give Paypal your bank account details. They strongly advise it, as they say it may slow down the transaction if you dont. But I have successfully used my Paypal account (albeit on the Bay of Evils) without giving my bank account details and it hasnt slowed down the transaction one iota.

I use account transfer too. Much easier IMO.

Im in the same boat as TG and others....

Have been using PayPal successfully for several years and have had nothing but positive outcomes, especially when o/seas transactions are involved. The small margin taken by PayPal for performing this service is quite equitable in my opinion,

                    Mal.

                      Re: Signing up for PayPal?

I recently added my bank account for the option of withdrawing some of my PayPal balance if I felt the need.

I must say I was a little annoyed to find that my bank acount is now my default account and that if I want to use my credit card for payments as I have been for all these years, I have to choose it each time during the payment process.
I prefer my credit card to be my backup payment method as banks charge a lot for accidentally overdrawing bank accounts.

I havent used this new method for payment yet as my PayPal balance has been enough for a while so until I give it a go Ill be apprehensive.

I think Ill be writing to PayPal to be less restrictive in this regard.

Makes no difference to us really, as we both use Debit Cards....

Firstly, I would like to thank all the CoffeeSnobbers who were good enough to share their experience of PayPal.

It looks as though I need to do more home to find out about the PayPal "credit card option".

I have steered clear of PayPal up to now because "who foots the bill" was unclear to me.  However there is a push by EBay to make Paypal the sole option for the payment of EBay purchases (the push is currently in hot water with the ACCC).  Hence I feared that it was time that I updated my knowledge base.

I apologise for taking so long to revisit the Bulletin Board and read the answers to my query and repeat my thanks for the helpful advice.

                          Felix

Theyre in hot water with the ACCC mainly because Paypal is owned by evil bay.

Yes. If theyre not careful the ACCC will wield their mighty power and give them.. the frowning of a lifetime.

Im sure theyre shaking in their boots.
