I used to get scammers calling using the old Microsoft Windows method. At first I simply hang up on them, but when I had time I did try a few variations by sayin " but I have Apple/ Mac devices, how do I find the command window?? " , they would just abruptly hang up by then. This only worked for 6 months also, after which the operator would say "hang on, I will transfer you to my manager"..then I would change my story to say I only have mobile phones and no computers in the house.

Eventually the lady started swearing at me and hung up.
A decent rendition of the Fawlty Towers character "Manuel" seems to generate this sort of response too...

I too am an aficionado in the art of scam baiting. My high score is only 40min with a computer scam. Spend a while pretending to turn on the computer then not able to find the control key. Eventually the lady started swearing at me and hung up.

Haven't had any calls lately but am dying to try this one

Like Rocky our scam calls declined greatly after we got rid of the landline many years ago.
I now get the robocalls and the callback scams on the mobile every now and then.
Robocall tends to be either "Your Amazon Prime account is about to be renewed for ninety nine dollars and ...." (you get the idea), or some variation of "There is a warrant out for your arrest".
    https://www.donotcall.gov.au/consume...on-scam-alert/

The callback scams are those you get a quick ring/hangup from an international number and you are meant to call it back out of curiosity and if you do it somehow gets connected to come super premium call cost that just goes on your phone bill. I've never called back and normally just block the number as soon as it happens. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/20...dont-call-back

Back when we had the landline, I also tried to keep them on the line to stop them scamming other (when I had the time). My favourite was the Microsoft scam where they had detected an error on my computer.
"Oh no... Which one? I've got 26"
Only managed around 15 minutes or so, but at least I had fun.

I used to work in back of house for Telstra, in network data services (essentially we maintained cable/physical network records and addressing/mapping details)
One morning before I left home for my evening shift, I got a call from a scammer claiming he was from Telstra, blah, blah, blah
I let him go for a bit then started refuting his claims. To which he started swearing at me, threatening my mother and whatnot
I then informed this nice chap that I "too" worked for Telstra, and that I'd be more than happy to go into work and trace his call back to his desk phone to alert his supervisor to what he was saying.
Poor bloke immediately started crying and pleaded me not to because he had a family and couldn't afford lose his job.
I hung up and had a good laugh, poor bloke, I was a SQL developer/IT admin and couldn't do any of that...

Dad tends to keep the scammers on the line for as long as possible if he has the time.
His theory is that if they are talking to him they are not talking to a little old lady and emptying her bank account... like a community service!

His record was a "Microsoft Service Agent" (he's a *nix guy which makes it funnier) who he kept them on the line for near 3 hours pretending to turn his computer on, have trouble getting the mouse to work, can't find the icon, then put them on hold to answer the door, take the dog outside etc etc.

    Latest scam:
    Phone call (mobile, looks legit)
Claim that they are from the National Crime Authority and they are calling you to warn you that your TFN may have been compromised.
I wanted to play, so answered the call.
It was a gent with a pronounced Indian accent claiming they were from NCA.
I asked all sorts of questions and got him to repeat himself (he did have an accent) a few times.
They speak very quickly and sound rushed, so pretending to be hard of hearing is always a hoot.
He finally hung up when I asked him "How can my TFN be compromised, and what is your definition of a compromising position?"

No TFN birthdays or real names were given out.

Haven't had any scams since we got rid of the Landline but did get a call on my Mobile yesterday.
When I answered she said "Can I help you?" I said "Do I need help?" She said " Do you have a Medicare account?" At that point I hung up.

Since Nigeria has run out of royalty to send money it seems American Presidents are now given the job.
We get a lot of robocalls and spam, rarely well directed but occasionally you'll get one with reasonable formatting that shows some effort, but still illogical to send this one to *.com.au address.

So what scam have you seen today?

    -------------

    Andy,

I can help get Freeman a check for up to $33,000 per employee in COVID-related stimulus money.
This is different that a PPP/PPP-2 loan and does not have to be repaid. It’s stimulus money as part of the $1.9 trillion legislation passed recently by the Biden Administration.
