    Re: iPhone!

A recently posted befitting link, methinks, from Koffee Kosmo, relevant in this discussion of relative tech know-how ideas, & its (ultimately redundant) place ...

Im a Luddite at heart, so am waiting for the inevitable anti-tech movement to win through, & common sense to gain some ground ... :

      Re: iPhone!

Has anyone had the lesson of the 90 day rule?

A story from a guest speaker as I remember it

My wife and I purchased our dream home it was all we ever wanted
"Except for the orange come red tiles on the kitchen floor"

The first thing that had to go was those ugly tiles

One month later I said to my wife I need to organise a quote for replacing those tiles

Two months later they started to grow on me and did not seem offensive anymore

Three months later I was agreeing with the last owner’s choice to use that colour of floor tile as at certain times of the day it made the house a home

The moral of the story is it takes three months to get to know something

So with the I Phone it will take 3 months to go back to basics and use it as it was intended "making phone calls 99% of the time"

      KK

Imagine one of the better Nokias/Sony/BlackBerry but with a real API, a real developer base, a good interface, no tiny buttons, no silly stylus to lose, small and no "mobile" versions of software. You get a real browser with a good way to navigate it. I even have tabs.
          I have a better Nokia.

Even the little touches are really nice. Trying to lock a Nokia or Sony has always been some dumb combination of keys. On the iPhone you push the power button once and it goes to sleep mode. Push it again and it wakes up.
Most Nokias can be set to lock automatically.

To turn off the ringer you flick a little switch. My old Nokia and Sony required navigation of menus.
With my Nokia its a single push on the power button and select silent.

The default screen contains useful information and useful shortcuts.
          My Nokia has useful shortcuts.
I can get to all my favourite apps with the push of one or two buttons.

I agree with flynnaus. Version 1.0 can be trouble.
Many years of experience with computers backs this up.

Too many companies these days treat the customer as Beta testers.

By the time my Nokia needs replacing I may get an iPhone.
          But not today.

            Ahhh... very true!

You have to be a VERY brave person to purchase a new release of any software or hardware.....

But I wouldnt say "Too many companies"..... Id say "Just about all companies"!!!! And that doesnt exclude Apple either.

TG, this thing has been available in the US for a year - hardly beta...probably closer to obsolete! ;D

---edit--- sorry Dennis, didnt see your post over the page when I posted much the same sentence --- :-[

The iPhone is far from new... its just new to Australia and the 3g is new (minor change really).   Great sized screen, good resolution, fast processor and an interface that encourages the owner to use it.

Bolbs "Sony Ericsson Xperia X1" looks like a good device too, even runs *nix so the application development should be pretty quick.  Might be the killer phone of 2008

Thundergod... does your Nokia use a querty keyboard?
(you didnt mention the model yet)

I currently use a N73 nokia (3G on 3) and its a great phone (no auto-lock TG).  The camera on it is pretty useful as it takes great quality pictures but I dont really want to try and web browse or email from it.  I looked at the external Nokia keyboard when I bought the phone (which would fix the email) but it is still a crummy screen for web and without WiFi it is also expensive to use.   The N95 has WiFi and is better but still has failings.

I think I need a full sized laptop that folds into a phone sized device and runs on battery for a week.

Just to go back on-topic for a bit.... Im happy that recurve boy has got a new toy and hope it does everything he needs it to do, including making phone calls.

                  Re: iPhone!

Up in the cupboard I have a Sony Ericsson P800 that looks like it could have been the forerunner to the iPhone. Its 6 or 7 years old now and pretty chunky by todays standards.

The user manual is about 120 pages - all in English. Had the works - touch, handwriting recognition, pc suite, outlook and lotus notes, word, excel, p/point, project, email, fax, and even visio viewers. I think it took me 6 months to learn how to use it! ;D

Good for you recurve boy - if I had an excuse to get an iPhone I would!

                    Re: iPhone!

The reason i like the Sony Xperia X1 is the full qwerty keyboard for email which i do quite a few per day.
Being a microsoft house and at the end point we dont do much in the way of software development, we are a professional consultancy. We have more end users who demand to get their email 24 x 7, we are due to do a blackberry test shortly so this may throw spanners in the works as well.

Just last week I configured a Blackberry server for a customer... I called it noxious.

Nasty software but once you get it running walk away from the server slowly... and never touch it again.

                      ;-)

There are some inherent truths behind the names of some products:
Blackberry - Nice if theyre supplied to you ready to eat, but maintaining them is a pain.
                        nab - to steal
Apple - It just works. It kind of depends on how you say just really!

Rubbish. Does your Nokia have an accelerometer with a Lightsaber app? NO. IT DOESNT. :P You also dont have super monkey ball!

Most Nokias can be set to lock automatically.

Possibly I am comparing with Nokia models that I was willing to pay for and thus tried. They are all pretty bad. The only full keyboard gadget Ive tried is some HP job, a BlackBerry and a Palm phoney thing. Theyre no good for typing. One of the good things with the iPhone scheme is that large fingers dont matter.

You still dont have a massive community of developers. There are phones that are technically better, but this is what is going to win the day. Some of the free ones are already really useful. E.g. Tomato - searches rotten tomatos and returns a full review and the average rating for a movie. I guess you could navigate to their site, but why not just push a button?

I can get to all my favourite apps with the push of one or two buttons.
But do you have shortcut that takes you straight to coffeesnobs?

                          Being a microsoft house
Apple is usually a bad choice in this case.

Try the IMate Jasjam or similar running on Windows Mobile 6
It will work for everything you want to do
Even if you use it as a computer or contact manager only and Active sync it to your PC

                            KK
                            Edit:-
P.S - I made this post with the IMate Jasjam while connected by Active sync with my computer by USB cable

The iPhone is (according to M$) not targeted at business users but can sync with MS Exchange servers and can read MS Office documents http://microsoft.blognewschannel.com/archives/2007/06/27/iphone-gets-microsoft-exchange-and-office-compatibility/

I think if you are going to be using a handheld device for business purposes, and you usually use Windows for everything, then you need a smartphone, PDA, whatever based on Win Mobile 6 pr compatible. If you need to email often then you need something with a good keyboard. I like the keyboard that comes with teh Jasjams. Blackberry keyboards look too small and fiddly.

I find the requirement for Activesync a nuisance though.

my Nokia is an N70 (also no auto-lock).

That way I can still make calls with one one while using the lightsabre with the other.

And I could program one of my shorcut buttons to go straight to Coffee Snobs.
