Re: Minimum age to drink coffee

Sorry - just cuz of previous references to caffeinated cola drinks ...  : I think Ive cleared it up.

But, no, they are not allowed any softdrink, with the exception of soda water (which they dont like). And they can only have diluted, unsweetened juice, and only one cup a day of it at that. How mean am I?

Why not? Seriously. If you said you absolutely wont allow them to drink any and all fizzy drinks... Id still ask why not... but why single out Coke?

My two year old daughter likes coffee. Its mainly because she likes sitting down with us at 3:30 every afternoon Im not at work I think. Shes always been curious about tasting things (like all kids) so I tried to help her realise she wouldnt like it by dipping my finger into some espresso and letting her taste it - "Mmmmm!" Child 1, Father 0. She normally just gets a few drops in the bottom of a cup of hot milk but it makes it a different colour and has a slightly different flavour so shes happy. I certainly wouldnt be giving her proper concentrations at her age, but she does like the flavour regardless.

Same thing happened in our place Greg.

My three year old daughter will happily drink a drop or two of espresso in a cup of milk as her "cawfee". My 17 month old son is the problem, hes got a taste for straight espresso, and we cant leave cups lying round when theyre finished - hell literally lick every last drop out of the cup. Of course, neither of them are ever permitted to drink a full shots worth - I suspect they never have more than about 5 ml in any one time.

Edit: Caffeinated soft-drinks are a different story, more because of the excessive quantities of sugar than because of the caffeine.

My parents didnt let me have coffee till my mid teens, and i never really had a desire for it either. Loved tea from around 12 or so.
Then at around 15 i started drinking filter coffee by the jug-full.
    And now? Well......................
For my kids (when or if) i think maybe mid teens, just like my parents did for me.

I started fairly young too because of my Greek background but not much and not often.

My two are now 24 and 27 and she prefers hot chocolate and he prefers tea.
They both do drink coffee occasionally when out with friends but never showed any interest when growing up.

Initially my kids wouldnt touch it. Then I developed the special chair restraints and force fed it to them. Once the addiction took hold I didnt have to use the restraints very often and now they even ask for it...

...oh, you want a serious response? My 9 yo son wont even touch hot chocolate!???? I could make him milk shakes all day but as soon as some temp goes into a drink he seems to think it must be bad. > My daughter loves hot chocolate with a passion and will even come running from her bedroom at 2 minutes past dawn if she hears me touch the machine. She sometimes sips my coffee saying she "doesnt like it that much, but she loves the aftertaste" so I think theres potential there...

Keep in mind that when I got my machine I was the ONLY coffee drinker and the ONLY warm drink drinker. Now I have my wife on espresso and the daughter tasting it. Only the boy thwarts my ambition of world domination...

I think it is all about moderation. My 4 yr old boy really likes the taste, my 6yr old daughter hates it. So shell get a hot chocolate and Ill add the first few seconds worth of my espresso to his. A full strength coffee drink cant be good for young children, and I dont think Coke is good for them either, but in moderation they can enjoy a little of both.

Yep the teenagers did not even seem keen to try till 15 and 16 so no problem there.
However now its an obsession so my younger 2 would like to start now 5 & 7, but
they can stay on drinking chocolate for a few years yet.

My kids prefer hot chocolate over coffee now 19 & 23 yo
But I started drinking coffee at the age of 5 when my grandmother started to teach me to make coffee in a briki
