After visiting Fitzroy Gardens & Cooks Cottage, the only 18th Century building in Melbourne, you could have an Indulgent Afternoon Tea, at the magnificent HOTEL WINDSOR, 111 Spring Street, often voted Australias favorite hotel.

(snip) you can see the oldest building in Australia (snip)
    (snip) Australias oldest building (snip)

The oldest building in Australia as opposed to the oldest building built in Australia...

    Captain James Cooks cottage!

    8-)

yeah, tis worth a look too even if only to feel guilty for the obscene sized houses we "need" now.

Fitzroy Gardens at the Paris end of the city behind the Parmament Buildings are well worth a look, you can see the oldest building in Australia & what is left of the delightful Fairies Tree.
It must be pretty high up with a very powerful telescope as you would need to see all the way to Parramatta in Sydney to see Australias oldest building (Old Governmnet House in Rosehill) :P
That would be Melbournes oldest building I imagine.

But I second the Fitzroy Gardens suggestion. Theres often things going on in Federation Square across from Flinders St Station and there (Still is?) a mini-market in Southbank on and under the St Kilda Rd bridge on Sundays.

Cooks Cottage is the answer to a trick quiz question about Australias oldest building as it was built in Yorkshire, England, in 1755 by the parents of Captain James Cook, Cooks Cottage was transported to Melbourne in crates and barrels, re-assembled and officially opened in the Fitzroy Gardens in 1934.

The Faries Tree often has notes, letters & presents for the faries left by children, it is quite enchanting.
    THE FAIRIES TREE
CARVED BY OLA COHN, M.B.E., A.R.C.A.
    FROM 1931-34
"A GIFT TO THE CHILDREN OF MELBOURNE"
Foreward from her book, "The Fairies Tree"

"I have carved a tree in the Fitzroy Gardens for you and the fairies, but mostly for the fairies, and those who believe in them, for they will understand how necessary it is to have a fairy sanctuary - a place that is sacred and safe as a home should be to all living creatures.

"Australias most famous pub" Young & Jacksons opposite Flinders St Station is the home of Chloe, a Melbourne icon, mascot for the HMAS Melbourne, an extremely fine work of art, she is an ingenue, a nymph, a celebrity. She is Chloe, the famous nude portait which has graced the walls of the Young and Jackson Hotel since 1909. She is free to visit ( up the stairs) & a mighty fine place for a pot of Melbourne Bitter.
The War Memorial on the St Kilda Rd just out of the city is also a good place to visit, great sculptures & a wonderful place to reflect on our past history.

All accessable by tram, good luck if you can work out how to pay the fare!

Hi Dan, while its not a modern cafe by any means Pellegrinis is a Melbourne institution. Also have a beer at Young and Jacksons. Once you have done these two things you can say you have been to Melbourne

    Hi Yeeza,

The markets can be fun, but I mainly enjoy that for veg/fruit/fish/meat shopping - there is a lot of junk in the stalls.

Not sure what you are intrested in, but I enjoy the museum. I often go there with my 2yo daughter mainly because she loves running around like crazy in the big open spaces. There is some interesting stuff there, and they also have lots of black mazzers that would look just right on my kitchen bench.

    Damian.

Depending on whos playing Bennets Lane Jazz club http://www.bennettslane.com/ is a good hangout if that takes your fancy. Fairly close to Lygon St or Fitzroy St.

If you finish up in St Kilda Corriander Thai or The Street Cafe were a couple of my favourite huants then just around the corner to the Espy for some music.

    Have fun.

    - Queen Victoria Markets.
FYI - Queen Vic Market is not open on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I used to work nearby and saw a fair number of disappointed tourists who didnt know the days it was closed.

have to second that - excellent if you are a vegetarian - but helluva expensive and you need to book. B
Not just vegetarian food but, yes, expensive. The 8 course menu tasting is the go - it was around $120 pp then iirc.
