    Cant you get a refund?

If there is nowhere that it says its the notebook, get you money back.... you may have to do a bit more testing on other peoples machines.

Sorry I have no solution - but everything works on my Apple Macs. Good luck trying.

    TK.

Ive heard that the serial adapters you can get which suit older PDAs do the best job, even work perfectly with cisco gear

    Hi Chris,

I have some experience with the USB serial converters and I don’t like them sometimes you can get them to work.

I use the serial port mostly to configure Cisco routers and switches. Most new laptops don’t have serial or parallel ports so to get around the problem I buy a port replicator/ docking station to get the ports (we only use IBM/Lenovo). Currently I have a ThinkPad R61 with a port replicator.

Can you get one for your laptop? If you can’t or don’t want to I have some laptops that run XP with serial ports we could do a swap for something coffee related.

you say that it is a IR receiver so I am assuming the equipment itself has the transmitter. most laptops have IR adapters built in (though the newer ones have been slowly replacing these with bluetooth). have you checked that yours doesnt have one?
have you tried USB based IR receivers? I would expect them to have drivers that create a COM port much like a USB based BT adapter does. the converter merely deals with the hardware. unless you have a COM port (or whatever the software is expecting) defined and mapped to your device it wont work. usb, serial, ir are just transport and you need to marry it with some software settings the app needs. you can also get PCMCIA serial cards, though they are pricey

Well I wont say I hope that they fix it - they should. But if they arent convinced, you might mention that you moderate a forum that has several coffee machine technicians and enthusiasts (international) as members that might be influenced by the outcome of this incident.

    Hi Chris,

just a thought try setting the software to different COM ports. With USBs is doesnt matter but your convertor might be a litle more specific.

I have run into similar issues with some R/C flight simulator leads some of which were on Serial leads with convertors.

    best of luck
Thanks BF, I have already had an attempt at that. I have an IT background....Frustrating >
