Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi all,
Thanks for any help and info in the previous article.
Now I finally bought my Sunbeam EM6910 and 480, of course both are second hand.
Got Em480 few days ago, just practice it with moka pot and plungger.
Honestly, I can tell the different from my previous cutting machine, but not sure which one I preferred.
Maybe next step is to get some fresh beam now...^^
Thanks again for everyones help, I start to enjoy more my espresso and latte.

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
To Mal,
Thanks for the info.
But I am thinking something under 400.- for a machine.
However I still asked a bargain.
To Lindsay
Since I live in Townsville QLD, I dont think it will be possible to get the machine over there.
I will try the eBay for luck.

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi Colin,
A far a I know Sunbeam factory shop = Melb + Syd only.
SB seem a bit shy of putting about that they have a factory shop (no mention that I could find on website).
Here is all I have SB factory outlet
8 Sloane Street, Maribyrnong Vic 3032 ph 03 9317 823 Mon-Fri-5PM Sat-3PM.
The Breville factory outlets do internet deals but no Ikon on offer currently. In shop Ikon = $159

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi Mal,
Thanks again.
Now just like to confirm that you mean Ikon is better than 800ES, even they come from the same company-Breville and the RRP of 800ES is more expensive than Ikon?
Just feel a bit wierd tho...

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Gday again Colin,Originally posted by 25292A2F28312328460 link=1245475986/5#5 date=1245589017Hi Mal,
Thanks for your info about both.
After reading the thread you mention, I found the Sunbeam EM0480 should be the basic grinder for entry level, is that right?
Then I think I will go after this one due to a limit budget.
Yes mate, that would be the way to go... 8-)
Of the appliance types of machines made by Breville and Sunbeam, etc the Ikon would be considered the best pick immediately under the SB EM6910. If youre able to get hold of a used Gaggia Classic in excellent condition and demonstrated to be so, in front of you, then that would be well worth considering. Im not experienced with Gaggia machines though but quite a lot of our members are and could advise you on things to look out for when considering a used Classic.Originally posted by 25292A2F28312328460 link=1245475986/5#5 date=1245589017For a entry machine, you recommend Breville Ikon 400ES will better than 800ES and Gaggia Classic?
Bcuz I found the Ikon is cheaper a lot on eBay, so if its the best one I can have under 300, then I definitely go after that one.
And thanks again for your advice.
Colin
Short of a Classic though, I think you would be more than pleased with the performance of a Breville Ikon at the lower end of the market but would suggest purchasing from a Breville "Seconds" store before looking at stuff on e-bay. All the best mate...

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi Colin and CSrs,
At a Breville factory outlet you will find the Ikon BES400 for $159 and the BCG450 bur grinder for $79 (I think).
The Sunbeam factory outlets had the EM0450 grinder for $105 in Feb 09.
This could be a good departure point for a CSr
(I still havent got there yet)
Bon Voyage

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Welcome Colin.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
A basic machine considered to be worth getting is the Breville Ikon 400ES rather than the model youve mentioned. The Ikon uses a proper Boiler whereas the 800ES is a Thermoblock machine and not generally all that highly thought of around here. The only decent t/block machine in the consumer end of the market is the Sunbeam EM6910 and that costs considerably more than your stated budget.
What ever machine or brewer you end up with, unless you budget for a decent grinder and one such as the unit referred to by flynn_aus is at the bottom end of the range suitable for making espresso of passable quality, you will end up very disappointed. Have a read through this thread... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1194680556 before making any final decisions on what to spend your money....

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi Flynn,
I know my budget to buy a brand new one is impossible.
Thats why I am looking for used first.
Even the brand new one of Breville (800ES + RRP 199.- grinder) are 289+89 on eBay.
If I can not bid any good one on eBay, Im thinking go this combo for warranty safe.
But Im still waiting for the good chance to bid a Gaggia one.^^

Re: Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi Colin and welcome
With a budget of $300 I think you will find that you not be able to get both a machine AND grinder from your choices. Go for the Sunbeam grinder. You might be able to pick one up for less than $200 but that wont leave you much change for the machines on your list.
You will need to increase your budget or look for a manual coffee maker like an Aeropress or plunger.
You couldnt go wrong with the Aeropress + Kyocera combo for making quality coffee according to the comments on this thread:

Suggestion for Gaggia and Breville espresso machine
Hi all,
Just a newbie in the forum and coffee too.
Id like to buy a coffee machine and grinder which can make good coffee (for my level).
Ive browse several website and article already (coffeegeek and this one).
My budget is around 300, if go after brand new one I can pay a bit higher for warranty, and used one can save some money, either way is fine for me.
Now I focus on several model and brand already.
Machine-> Gaggia, Breville.
Grinder->Sunbeam, Breville.
Ideally, for Gaggia I am looking for something on ebay.
Like Espresso, Evolution, Syncrony logic
Breville: 800ES, Pro 800
Grinder I will choose one of these below
Sunbeam Cafe series 480
Breville RRP 199.- one.
However, I still feel confused about the main difference between.
Some people suggest Gaggia because the thermoblock compared to boiler in Breville.
Is that all the Gaggia machine is better than Breville in the same price level?
And I found a Gaggia Evolution on eBay has quite acceptable price, but I can not find any info about Gaggia Evolution, is it new model??
Any advice will be appreciated.
Colin
