  • Advice on New Coffee Machine

    Hi,

Would appreciate advice from experts here on which is a decent machine to buy for a good brew. I am currently using one of those capsule Nespresso machine. I am thinking of upgrading to a espresso machine so that I can try different beans and have a better frothed milk.

    My budget is around $400.

    Thanks.

    do you own a grinder?

        Hi Sunbird, and welcome!

You probably should have edited this thread instead of starting another one

I started on the ~$400 machine, and Ive regretted not buying something better.  My advice would be to either save up for a better machine (and youll need a grinder too); or buy a well looked-after second hand machine.

Theres a good thread here showing exactly what happens if you start on the cheapo machines.  Youll eventually get upgradeitis, and the cheap machines will cost you more in the long run (since they generally only last a few years).

However, I wouldnt listen to anyone who told me that a year ago, so good luck in choosing, and welcome to the beginning of the journey

Re: Advice on New Coffee Machine

As mentioned earlier got to have a grinder, preground just wont get it done for the best in flavours or results.

Minimum grinder of Sunbeam 450 or 480, Dont consider Delonghi, Breville etc they are sub par. If your really on a tight budget then Hand grinders are a possible $ saving, Hario or Kyocera as sold be some of the sponsors here.

Use the rest to get your machine. Some of the smaller Gaggias if you stretch a bit are a fairly robust machine that are tougher than the Breville or Sunbeam ones in that price range.

Better yet have a good look at the recent Nemox/Lelit machine/grinder combo threads and save for a touch longer and buy a machine ($750-800) that will last you a lot longer.

              Hi,

Sorry that I started another thread.  Thanks Mod for merging.  Will check out some of your suggestion. What are your thoughts on this:

Not sure if you are aware or not too non sponsor links are normally a nono so your link will go up in smoke soon

With your budget Saeco, Delonghi, Breville, Sunbeam, and even the lower end Gaggias are basically a kitchen appliance. That means they are designed to sort of do a job like the real thing but for home users and for a much lower price. The problem is this leads to average results higher failure rates and a shorter than desirable life for a lot of them.

Its a toughy but if you can do it cheap and you are happy with the results thats the most important thing

If the link goes, the machine is the "Saeco Aroma Stainless Steel".  Never seen it so I dont know.  At least it has a boiler.

The consensus here about the cheap end of the market appears to be the Sunbeam EM0450 or EM0480 grinder, coupled with the Sunbeam EM6900 or EM6910 machine.  I dont have either, so I cant comment, but the common complaint I see lately is that they break down after a year or so

                  YMMV

In the two and a half years that Ive been selling the Talk Coffee range of coffee machines I have never had one come back for a warranty repair - user generated or not.

                        Context my dear Watson..

                        KISS and Context...

If I was selling the same product from a shop and sight unseen by an agent who knew nothing about the item..

I would be getting warranty and follow up calls from a percentage of those that bought off the agent... Because the important issues are often not communicated..

(Context - the Talk Coffee range of coffee machines - imported by TC... Not Manufactured by TC)

It is also why Warranty is a marketing tool and a joke for some items..

Look at the range of Grinders some might be selling..

                        "Mazzer, Macap and Compak"

                        Sold with how much warranty ?  (12 months parts / labour / RTB ? / Excludes ???)

OK put a price on that warranty....  ($***. ** )

Is it $$ or Cents ?

Of course they will, I was just talking about the Sunbeam

but then, youre not selling Saeco nor Sunbeam, (according to your site-sponsor thread, not your web page, which I didnt check) which is the point of my post - a cheap machine will have a (non)-user-generated fault within a year or two.

So I guess Dennis is saying the same thing from the other end - a non-cheap "real" machine wont have such early-death problems, so in the long run it will cost you less

                            Hi Iain,

Saw that you have a Breville BES 820. Pardon me asking, what is the difference between the 820 and the 800. Saw one going for under $400.

                            Thanks.

The amount of posts and internet reviews I saw regarding sunbeams and breakdowns is what put me off them. I ended up getting a breville cafe roma and a sunbeam EM0480 grinder. Didnt appear to be as much complaints about breville breaking down but at this end of the scale its just a gamble! I bought it from a real retail store not online for the purpose of being able to throw it at someone if their service is lacking...
