Re: Advice on New Coffee Machine

    Hi,

Was busy. I finally end up with a Gaggia Classic. Got it for about 1 week. Have been enjoying it since. Mod the steam wand and is now getting better microfaom.

    Thanks Iain,

Saw that sale too. But it is in Melbourne and I am in Sydney.  Would prefer to see the item, since I will be paying a fair bit for it.
You could have a look in a store?! And I think its "new in box", but I understand what you mean.

From your post, unless I read you wrongly, you seems to be saying that it is not worth paying so much for a Breville.  What it is so?
I guess that answer starts to get personal - where I am at the moment means I am looking at a good quality second hand machine (cant afford a new one, and you can clean them up nice!). Something that will last a number of years with proper service, and make great coffee. Ive seen some top cafe quality machines go for just a few hundred bucks lately. So personally I would go for a second hand solution that will make better coffee than a new Breville

Hey Sunbird, theres an 860 going in the for sale section!

    $550 is a bargain.

Id still spend it on something else, but if youre convinced, get in quick (or wait for a price drop... up to you)

    Hi Iain,

Saw that you have a Breville BES 820.  Pardon me asking, what is the difference between  the 820 and the 800.  Saw one going for under $400.

    Thanks.
The primary extras on the 820 that I can see are:
    • hot water wand
    • program button (for customising your extraction time)
    • pressure guage (colours, not numbers) where the 800s steam / water switch is
    • steam / water switch on the right face, near the top
    • LED in water level window

    if these links work:
    800 820 860

IMHO, the only feature I care about now (was different when I purchased it) is the pressure guage. Even though it has no numbers, it still tells me where the machine is going to block up and stop working (I aim for just under this spot!)

Since I bought mine, the BES860 is out. It has an integrated grinder, and those cool pf spout things.

But please tell me youre not going to spend that much money on a Breville

    HTH

If I was selling the same product from a shop and sight unseen by an agent who knew nothing about the item..
In that case, I take it that when you say, "USER error", you actually mean its the fault of the sales staff/agent. ;D

Re: Advice on New Coffee Machine

The amount of posts and internet reviews I saw regarding sunbeams and breakdowns is what put me off them. I ended up getting a breville cafe roma and a sunbeam EM0480 grinder. Didnt appear to be as much complaints about breville breaking down but at this end of the scale its just a gamble! I bought it from a real retail store not online for the purpose of being able to throw it at someone if their service is lacking...

And ya think teh Saeco wont...

In the two and a half years that Ive been selling the Talk Coffee range of coffee machines I have never had one come back for a warranty repair - user generated or not.
but then, youre not selling Saeco nor Sunbeam, (according to your site-sponsor thread, not your web page, which I didnt check) which is the point of my post - a cheap machine will have a (non)-user-generated fault within a year or two.

So I guess Dennis is saying the same thing from the other end - a non-cheap "real" machine wont have such early-death problems, so in the long run it will cost you less

90% of the faults are USER generated..

    Context my dear Watson..

    KISS and Context...

If I was selling the same product from a shop and sight unseen by an agent who knew nothing about the item..

I would be getting warranty and follow up calls from a percentage of those that bought off the agent... Because the important issues are often not communicated..

(Context - the Talk Coffee range of coffee machines - imported by TC... Not Manufactured by TC)

It is also why Warranty is a marketing tool and a joke for some items..

Look at the range of Grinders some might be selling..

    "Mazzer, Macap and Compak"

    Sold with how much warranty ?  (12 months parts / labour / RTB ? / Excludes ???)

OK put a price on that warranty....  ($***. ** )

Is it $$ or Cents ?

If the link goes, the machine is the "Saeco Aroma Stainless Steel".  Never seen it so I dont know.  At least it has a boiler.

The consensus here about the cheap end of the market appears to be the Sunbeam EM0450 or EM0480 grinder, coupled with the Sunbeam EM6900 or EM6910 machine.  I dont have either, so I cant comment, but the common complaint I see lately is that they break down after a year or so

    YMMV
And ya think teh Saeco wont...

Go and visit teh local Saeco service centre.. The one up teh road is floor to ceiling with repair jobs..

    Same as teh EM6910 etc..

90% of teh faults are USER generated..

Not sure if you are aware or not too non sponsor links are normally a nono so your link will go up in smoke soon

With your budget Saeco, Delonghi, Breville, Sunbeam, and even the lower end Gaggias are basically a kitchen appliance. That means they are designed to sort of do a job like the real thing but for home users and for a much lower price. The problem is this leads to average results higher failure rates and a shorter than desirable life for a lot of them.

Its a toughy but if you can do it cheap and you are happy with the results thats the most important thing
