  • temperature adjustment on an Ikon?

Hello all - Im another newbie searching for technical advice. My new Breville Ikon/Krups upressurised basket/sunbeam burr grinder/coffee roasted this week setup is not turning out lovely thick & rich espresso.
I cant grind any finer (below 10 on the Sunbeam scale) otherwise I end up with 1 minute-plus pours of burnt coffee and slop in the basket afterwards.
The milk frothing spout spits out water intermittently long after I think it should be pure steam (that is a guess and only based on previous machines: from commercials to a cheap sunbeam).
So Im wondering: maybe the thing isnt as hot as it should be?

Has anyone figured out how to adjust the temperature on an Ikon?
    What else should I try?

    Many thanks

Sounds like your grind is way way to fine. Sloppy pucks are caused sometimes by water left on top of the puck that cant force its way through. As there is no 3 way valve on these machines the poor little pump will be running way over 9 bar and causing overectracted muck in the cup and it is most likely NOT a temperature thing.

1 Coursen up the grind and forget about the numbers.
2 weigh the dose if you have good scales or use your eye to try and repeat or change and improve.
3 good level tamp (hope you have a decent tamper?)
4 time the shots and look for signs of blonding etc.

change only one thing at a time and work on improvement. Good Luck.

      Thanks beanflying

      Youre right of course.

When I coarsen up the grind, the pour is much faster and the puck is dryer. But with a coarser grind even when super-tamped, the coffee looks (and tastes) like something from an American diner.

Im using a double-shot basket, 3/4 full. The beans are from a site sponsor so they cant be the problem . The tamper isnt a Pullman, but its OK.

Ive been using poured coffee volume, rather than time, to decide when to stop a shot while I try to get the quality right.

Am I right in thinking 90 degrees-ish is the ideal temperature of water as it enters the basket? Because mine is so much cooler than that that if I leave my hand there instead of the basket, it feels comfortable.

Thanks again for helping - I cant work out what else to try.

Part of your problem is there then Baskets are designed to be used full. A great thing to add to your coffee kit is a set of electronic jewelers scales from evilbay ($20-25) then you can pre weigh the beans and eliminate that variable.

Then you are really just down to Grind and Tamp to work on. Tamp is simple flat level and 10-12kg. By then it comes down to the grind.

Just wanted to thank you again, beanflying - with a full basket, my coffee is now delicious and caramel and just as we like it.
