Am I right in thinking you are not tamping at all because you dont yet have a tamper. You should probably wait till your new tamper arrives. What have you been using as a temp tamper? I lost mine once and used the bottom of a glass that was close in size to the filter basket and it worked ok, at least I could drink the coffee it made.

ah yes the magic of "fake crema"! the pressurised filter basket will give you crema no matter what, but its not the real deal. good on you for de pressurizing!

    * you will have to grind much finer than previously

    * another thought? underdosing (not enough coffee) will mean a watery extraction

plus all the tips that have wisely been given already by my learned friends.

    (ive just PMed you too!)

Get a decent burr grinder, use fresh beans, grind immediately prior to brewing and youll be drinking great coffee in no time at all.

Hi, yeah that could be the problem... i got my local coffee shop to grind the beans and it doesnt look too fine... I got creama when I used the presurizzed filter... but now that i have taken that out im not getting anything...do you suggest getting my own grinder and grinding my beans finer until the extraction time is good and there is creama?

It could be a number of things, what grinder are you using - maybe its not capable of grinding fine enough? What beans? How fresh are they?

Stale beans could also be the cause, good beans, well ground, need minimal tamping and a plastic tamper should be fine.

    De-pressurized Via Venezia and tamper

    Hi guys,

I recently de-pressurized my via venezia and I just ordered my tamper...

Is there anything I could use as a temporary tamp until i get one... I have been using various things but nothing is slowing the extraction time...

Is it safe to say i need to wait for the tamper because the compression is evenly distributed across the grind allowing for a proper extraction? at the moment the water is just dripped straight through and there is NO crema...

    Thanks!
Working...
