      The Fun list:
      1. Barrel of monkeys
      2. Trip to the dentist
      3. Everything else

Im pretty sure that Zassenhaus grinders are now just a figment of the online coffee communitys collective imagination.

Hmm, IIRC the last thing that I said was the figment of an online communitys collective imagination arrived in the mail last week....

        Hi All,
I work in an Intensive Care Unit and am looking for a machine to make decent coffee for the staff. It needs to be simple and robust. Would the Presso be suitable?
        Thank you for your advice

I dont know - but Im interested in the Presso - it looks good. I want something simple that will last and makes a good cup of coffee. If I entertain - I want to be able to make 4 - 6 cups without too much effort in between cups. I dont mind a little bit of cleaning - but the Presso looks like a simple tool with little mess.

Dr Dave: The only issue I would raise regarding the Presso in a communal setting is that some people find it a little intimidating. That said, it gains plenty of attention and once Id shown a few people how to use it, they were more than happy to put it to use.

Boro: For making consecutive shots the biggest limitation is your kettle volume, because its your source of hot water. Are you intending to steam milk as well? If you are, Id almost argue that the Presso puts you in a better position than a lot of domestic machines, to produce 4-6 cups with milk in reasonably quick succession would require quite a capable machine but could probably be achieved with the Presso and a cheaper machine acting as the steamer...YMMV

BTW, theres a fairly long Presso discussion thread in the <$500 Brewing Equipment area.

                        Dr Dave

Preparing espresso with any equipment, bar the coffee pod machine, takes some time to master. People need a little lesson beforehand n how to use the equipment to avoid damage or dissapointment.

I love my Presso and can prepare a latte in about 8 minutes including the hand grinding of the beans. The milk preparation (in my case heat milk on stove and whisk it) always involves a bit of washup and mess. Problems resulting in Presso misuse include bad coffee (preground and too course, too fast or too slow extraction), a blown gasket (coffee too fine), explosion (not putting the portafilter on properly).

I can see why plungers are popular at the work environment. You might be better off spending the office coffee kitty on fresh roasted beans and purchasing a good grinder (eg Sunbeam EM0480 or a good hand grinder) and concentrating on getting good coffee out of the plunger. Follow threads on how to get better plunger results.

The temptation in the office is for people to save time and denigrate the coffee making with prepackaged preground coffee. Rule number 1 is fresh roasted/fresh ground for good coffee. You could do a fortnightly online purchase off Bean Bay (on this site) to get good beans to your office with a minimum of fuss (and good value too).

                        Hope that helps
