    Re: $400 Auto from Aldi

Aldi products are hit and miss. They are sourced from various companies and re-labelled the fake Aldi brands (Lumina, Tevion etc.). You can get some real crap and you can get some quality stuff, and it can vary in quality with the same product too. Most people who buy them know theyll get x amount of use out of them, probably less likely to be able to get it repaired/parts, and decide whether or not its worth it. But you can certainly get lucky and get a pretty decent product for maybe half the price of a comparable name product.

Dont see why "coffeesnobs" has to equal coffee wankers.  A bloke bought a machine and posted the fact that he liked it.

A bunch of other blokes who had not bought the machine, seen it, used it, had coffee from it, walked past it or even known anyone who had done any of these things jumped him and ventured an opinion on it.  Not precisely sure what they were basing their opinions on, but hey round here that seems to be somewhat irrelevant.

Is the coffee going to be as good as from a $3000 machine with a $2000 grinder ?  Doubt it.  Doubt it will last as long either, but I think that can pretty well be assumed, cant it ?

Maybe someone got a fair machine at a great price and is drinking some reasonable coffee from it.  So hard for you to accept ?

Youre way off. A guy repeatedly post that machines bought from Aldi are high performance, state of the art machines. Same guy demonstrates lack of basic understanding of coffee principles (shining example is the photo of the grinds he posted, what an epic FAIL).

People who actually know a little about the topic respond to his dubious claims and try to set him straight and you call them wankers. I call them the upholders of truth.

And no, you dont need to have made coffee with this machine to know if its up to the standard of an Expobar. Do I have to drive a Great Wall car to know it wont keep up with a Porsche? If the Great Wall rep posts on a sports car forum that he bought a Great Wall and it is an excellent car that can hold its own against German and Italian sports cars am I a wanker if I call his bluff?

Not what happened.  Read the post.

        (1) It started with one person who saw fit to post a comment on the Lumina describing it as a "monstrosity" despite apparently not either having one or ever testing it.

        (2) a few posts later, a guy who had bought one said so and that he liked it so far.

        (3) intersperse a few more people who gather their opinions on a product via photosyntheis.

        (4) someone else likes theirs, "going well so far".

        (5) more opinions per rectum.

        (6) Lumina owner makes the point that comparing an Aldi Super Auto to several thousand dollars worth of italian chrome is like comparing a jap car to a RR -  Apples and Oranges, but both get you from A to B. Did he say one is as good as the other ? Nope.

Perhaps a mistake calling the Lumina "state of the Art" but I certainly got his point - without somehow deciding that he was a closet Aldi PR shill.

Brings me back to the basic point - If you drive a porsche good on you, I guess.  If you feel the need to patronise a Great Wall driver who has the temerity to say they like theirs - well, you are a common, garden, run of the mill Porsche driver.

I think sometimes people "snob in order to make themselves feel good about themselves, and its sad they put down others to do it. I own machines from "commercial Rancillio Epoca, prosumer expobar, to Sunbeam thermoblock" They are different machines and suit different purposes, and behave differently.
There are various forums for various price brackets which reflect various types of machines, and possibly levels of importance coffee plays in peoples lives and time they spend on it, and how much per cup they are willing to pay for a coffee. Its probably not polite, or usefull to bag people with $400 machines, in a "sub $500" forum about a $2000+ machine you may own. Try the "$3000" forum and brag about your $2000 machine if you want to make yourself feel better.

Somebody at my work bought one and they are happy with the Aldi unit. Im sure he will get a lot of coffees from it, and it will not cost much per cup.

In regards to reliablity, if you cant quote sample quantaties for returns, eg 1000 sold, 3 returned faulty, it is just personal experience and possibly not reflective overall of reliability, or excact nature of faults or specific design flaws.

I personally dont like autos becasue I tried to fix one at one stage and found them too fiddly to work on (received as a gift). It did make 1000s of coffees before its demise, which was a good return on investment per price of each cup.

              Re: $400 Auto from Aldi

This is all getting a bit out of hand and unnecessarily nasty. I apologize to anyone I have offended. I dont think anyone here really thinks are they superior to anyone else because they spent more on a coffee machine. The points being made here seem to be that 1) the Aldi auto is capable of making an acceptable coffee, 2) despite claims to the contrary it is not a high end machine nor could it be expected to provide a lifetime of service.

There have been outlandish claims made and somewhere in the middle is the truth. If the pro-Aldi side of the argument were a little more realistic to begin with the others probably wouldnt feel the need to shoot down their claims.

And Twitch, I personally wasnt patronising anyone. If I owned a Porsche (and I dont) and someone else owns a Great Wall, so what? Theyre cars, whatever. But if the Great Wall owner claims his car is as fast as mine I will laugh, not because I feel superior, but because his claims are a joke. You may think that makes me a "Porsche driver" and I may think youre just jealous. But I wont resort to calling you names.
