    this photo clearly shows the 15 bar gauge

    at the top right side is a little white knob-- (the pump speed controller)

    If you look closly at the bottom right side there is a little black lever-- (Line pressure controller)





    I can pre-infuse and ramp up or down any pressure I choose

    I can also ramp the pressure down to lengthen the shot without blonding and spend more time in the chock-let caramel phase of the shot at the end, some shots I let trickle at about 2-3 bar for a while at the end.

    It is just a cheap machine I picked up for $15 in mint cond. never used.

    the back gives easy access for mods.

    I am having a bit of fun pressure profiling different beams.[img][/img]

    I am finding that 9 bar for 30 seconds is no longer relevant

    What I do now is find the best grind for each bean,

    then adjust the machine to that grind rather then grinding for the machine.

    here you can see the plumbing involved

    All the brass bits on the right were added as well as the OPV

    the copper tube leading down to the bottom left goes to the Line pressure control valve

        That is quite impressive! I ended up upgrading to a new machine, didn't think of stuffing all the extra goodies into my cafe roma! Might not have fitted either I spose. How much extra for all the bits?

          Very impressive. Any room left for a PID? How do the shots compare to other machines, Silvia etc?

            I chose the SB because there are plenty around cheap and the back opens up for easy access to work on.

            I picked up this one in mint cond. for $15 and all the bits were around another $130.00

            PID is not an option with a thermoblock but the temp is already stable.

            Shots are very good, I never tasted a Slivia and the Silvia will always do a better job with the milk as will all the other machines.

            I have tried the best machines at all the roasters including the "strega" and some other high end machines.

            I am not making any comparisons but I do know what good coffee is and I am making good coffee now, well most of the time anyway.

            So far my main conclusion is softer beans like a slow ramp-up to to a 9 bar peak, then a lower pressure run around 3 bar

            harder beans don't seem to respond to lower pressure profiling or even pre-infusion so much.

            i am now going to experiment with SHB (hard beans) with a higher peak pressure like 13 bar then back it down according to flow.

                After quite a bit of playing around with pressure profiling what I have discovered is this;

                Soft beans like a very slow ramp up to pressure that acts as a pre-infusion then after a quick 9 bar peak

                let most of the shot flow around 4-5 bar, I get great flavors out of soft beans this way.

                hard beans do not like any pre-infusion so I let the pressure build as quickly as it can (vibe pump style is slow anyway)

                I even let very hard beans extract at 13 bar for the first 15 seconds then back the pressure down to 9 bar to stop any blonding for the rest of the shot.

                this is giving me the best flavors with a very hard bean I have now.

                Normal beans, well? maybe just a straight forward 9 bar shot.

                  Is there some correlation between "Soft / Hard beans" ..and "light roast , dark roast ".. ?
                  Or is this a completely different categorization. ?

                    Nice work C- man i opened up a brevile Cafe Roma this morning it doesnt look as if there is enough room inside. some one gave me a sunbeam EM480 i am really tempted to do this mod where did you get all the parts?

                      Sort of yes- Softer beans are just more delicate

                      Soft beans still can be roasted to any depth, however they are more sensitive and most roasters with start them on a lower heat.

                      also darker roasts on softer beans tend to degrade the structure of the bean, so softer beans do like lighter roasts, darker roasts work but have a shorter life.

                      I am sure there is much more to it, but that is as much as I know, Hope that helps.

                            Hey C-man just got the the guage & OPV from Stephanos, is it worth doing the Line pressure control valve & the pump speed controller if so where do i get them from?

                              not really necessary, and a lot of extra work, try it without first, but I like it for softer beans it works at treat.

                              the pump speed is just a fan control/dimmer from Bunnings $36.00 (it took a few weeks to cook in) the line pressure control is a ball valve lever (needle valve would be better) from Reese plumbing supplies.

                              WARNING be bloody careful with fan control/dimmers as they hold a charge and gave me one hell of a shock!
