That's twice I just posted on http://coffeesnobs.com.au/general-co...tml#post569485 before getting to this thread.

All plastics are far from equal, most are using cheap PVC / PVA or similar and yes, they taste terrible. So did every single metal pod, especially the aluminium ones with a coating of (??? some unidentified crud). Fortunately the EU guys have a good food grade standard* so most of them do not overpower the coffee with a tainted flavour. Some (er, most) of them still leave a noticeable aftertaste.

We tested well over 50 models of pods** comprising of a wide variety of materials and only two went to a second round of taste testing: both EU food grade plastic, both one shot (i.e not easily refillable). BTW, some of the notes from the failures make interesting reading.

I can get the details of the winners next time I am there if you wish (PM me).

Good luck with your weekender B & B.

    * Are you listening Australia? Thanks to JH for making our food labelling damn near meaningless: the b*****d must have got some commercial pressure, if not an outright bribe.

** Actually capsules, according to the Dimal post. Although now the makers & consumers generally call them pods, I totally give up on that debate: the "real pods" in a cloth bag have been mainly from Phillips and taste both truly awful and stale at the same time. "They will never be missed" (Gilbert & Sullivan). Reminds me of my Carmencitas aka moka pot aka stovetop espresso pot - as long as people know what you mean it is fair enough... Oh, and as a computer guy, don't even get me started on routers / modems.

Whoops, missed that bit. Thanks, @rawill.
I'll look for the metal one then

Normally I use my BCG800+EM6910 combo. But I do have a Nespresso Pixie machine that I used to put in my parents' weekend home.
Now that my grinder is broken and out for repair, the Nespresso has been my saver. I'd rather have Nespresso than instant coffee.
I do miss the versatility of trying different beans, though.
For those who managed to find suitable refillable capsules, which one did you get? The plastic ones, or the metal ones?

We have one at the firestation, and one of the other brigades in the group has one on their fire appliance! There is nothing better on the fireground, but I avoid using the one in the station Just saying..

Pods and Capsules are NOT the same thing...

Whether you believe that Pods or Capsules are capable of producing decent coffee aside, they are quite different devices and require different machinery to use....

    Thank you all.

This has been an interesting discussion and I appreciate your opinions.

I am reasonably sure that once I have done my home work on which pod machine to get I will go ahead.
Especially thanks for the tips on the no frother models or attachements unless they are good quality aftemarket versions.

While our rental is not too upmarket, I thought if Nespresso could give a better than instant coffee drink the guest could be really happy.

I can see I will need to get the reusable pods, and fill them, no issue there, see the gear I already use at home.

Unless our visitors are just humouring me, I hope not!, they all say the really like the coffee I give them.
And I use Hummingbird beans, only just roasted.

Yeah I agree. I'm patently against Nespresso due to the overpriced, stale coffee that they're peddling and the extreme wastage generated by the single use pods (yes, they can be recycle, but it's still not that easy). But I actually agree that a Nespresso would be a good fit in this situation, especially if rawill will be supplying quality coffee in reusable pods.

    +1

On the odd occasion that I go to my local shopping centre (maybe 4 times a year), I visit the Nespresso shop posing as an interested buyer.

Once I have explained what a cortado is, they usually make me a double shot with one of the darker roasts, and it is definitely drinkable. As good as GJ or Coffee Club, plus its free!

    But here goes!

I have a rental place, for weekend stays.
I was wondering if the Nespresso makes coffee a step better than instant.

I would be surprised if it didn't.

So does anyone have any enlightening comments to make.

    G'day Robin

I just posted http://coffeesnobs.com.au/general-co...tml#post569347 about pods a few minutes ago.

Using refillable pods / fresh roast and a good (no plastic) machine and you can supply your guests with a pretty good cuppa (better than most aeropresses in my view, but then so is my "chemical stirrer / modded plunger"). Basically in terms of taste: different strokes, different folks. Yep, the Nespresso milk froth is a bad joke, however a small plunger and a microwave (or even one of those specialised frothers) can do that at a pinch.

Finding any decent coffee maker at a B & B / motel / hotel is always a huge bonus to a weary traveller: I still remember one in the '80's at Byron Bay: they brought freshly plunged coffee from Zeitgeist as soon as you informed them you were awake... then left some freshly ground coffee and the plunger for you to do more later. Needless to say, we used to vary our timetable to stay over once or twice every trip.

I also agree with you that supplying a full setup (grinder and espresso machine) is just asking for trouble. You would be lucky to go two weekends without a breakdown.

    Have a great XMas.

Tend to agree, a holiday rental or hotel room is where a Nespresso machine makes sense.

Way better than instant, neat clean and foolproof.

Also agree avoid the milk one. Yuck.
