Yep, that's a worthwhile mod' to do.
    Re: the grinder...
The best upgrade you could probably do would be to upgrade the grinder, rather than the Classic to something else.
There are often very good grinders 4-Sale in the Hardware 4-Sale section, so well worth a look. Otherwise, depending on what your budget can stretch to, you could opt for a Macap M2M, M4 or M4D; something from the Eureka range such as Mignon or Atom - Lots to choose from but always best to try-out in person if you can, at one of the Site Sponsors premises or a reputable Specialist Retailer.

A decent grinder makes a huge difference to the consistency of the quality in the cup.

    Thanks Mal,
I found the grinder from the Dual Boiler to work good so far, however it needs to be set on the finest grind setting.

    Welcome Brad...

No mate, the Smeg unit is not an upgrade from a Gaggia Classic if one is talking about the quality of the coffee in the cup.
If you're focussing on quality, the Gaggia will deliver, so long as your technique is correct, you use freshly roasted beans (between one and two weeks post roast), use a decent steel-burr grinder and only grind the coffee immediately prior to pulling the shot.

Have all those ducks in a row, and you'll enjoy excellent coffee. Of course, like anything, you need to maintain the Classic properly and regularly. Lots of info to be found here on how to do that...

    All the best,
    Mal.

    Smeg ECF01

    Hi there,

About 2 months my Breville dual boiler carked it, and I'm now looking for a replacement machine!

I have a Gaga Classic ('08/1400w model) but have a choice to go to a Smeg ECF01, can anyone tell me anything about these? Are they good/worth it as an upgrade to the Gaggia? would be making 2-4 coffees a day minimum.

    Cheers, Brad
Working...
