  • Presure in PF after shot

    I am using a Sunbeam Cafe Crema and every now and then, when I have finished a shot as I release the PF I get sprayed with grinds and water from the PF . This does not happen every time but often enough to be causing concern as the spray could burn.

    I have tried under dosing/overdosing and it still happen about 1 in every 5 shots. :-[

    Any advice would be appreciated

    If you leave the pf in place for a few seconds the pressure will leak through the puck. Most higher end machines have a 3 way selinoid, that releases the pressure after a shot, but some cheaper machines dont have that so the pressure stays just above the puck, untill it bleads throught the coffee...

      I have left it in position for different times up to a minute and still on the odd occasion it retains pressure and I get an explosion on release.

        Are you possibly grinding too fine? How is the shot, maybe the coffee is too fine and creates a barrier??? I dont think there is much else you can do to help it, maybe just release the pf slowly and let it seep past the seal? By the way, its calledd a pf sneeze sometimes...

            I think this machine does have a 3-way valve, my EM03500 certainly did. Perhaps its blocked. This would make sense if hasnt been backflushed regularly - happened to my old Sunbeam after a couple of years of regular use with no maintenance

              Thanks I will check that out. I am not sure if it has a 3 way valve but anything is possible. I have only had it about 3 weeks. :-/

              The instruction booklet does not describe backflushing as an option.

                My saeco vv has the same problem. Too fine a grind will certainly contribute to the problem, but I find that I need to pour a certain amont of coffee inorder to depressurize the basket. So even if Im pulling a double ristretto, I will continue the pour (into another glass of course) untill Ive poured the equivalent of a double shot. By this time my machine has lost its steam. Are you always pouring the exact amount of coffee?

                  I let it pour until I get blonding. The time varies depending on many factors as I am in the first stages of becoming addicted to making my own expresso. So the tamp pressure probably varies to a certain degree even though I try to be consistent.

                  I bought this machine to see if we would stick with making expresso and not return to plunger/dare I say it, instant coffee .

                    Hey, I used to use a Gaggia Carezza, which doesnt have a solenoid. I used to find the same with the portafilter on every shot. What you can do is pull about 30-60 seconds of water through the puck after you have finished your shot (take the cup away and keep pulling blonded coffee into the tray or a dirty cup). You wont have any problems if you do this

                      I seem to have fixed the problem by adjusting the grind. But I will keep your remedy in mind if it starts again.
