  • Advice: Machine Under $400 ?

After lurking around the forums Ive finally made a decision to register. 8-)

I have read a quite a few threads on recommendations (most have been around the $100-$200 mark). As such I thought Id ask what machine you would choose under $400. Its for home use and will be making at least 4 cups a day.

Given the reviews I was thinking of getting the Sunbeam EM0480 grinder (unless you can come up with something better).

Of course, if there are vendors reading this, feel free to make an offer (Im in Melbourne, Vic) and are happy to support the advertisers on here.

    Welcome to Coffee Snobs Simon.

I have a Sunbeam Grinder that I used with the Sunbeam 6910 at work.
It produces adequate ground coffee but be warned its messy and noisy.

Let me state up front that at home I use an Expobar and a Macap grinder.
Both well above the budget you have set.
But Im not going to tell you to spend thousands of dollars to get a good coffee.

Would it be possible to stretch your budget to a Sunbeam EM6910?
Normal retail is $699 but Ive seen a few ads lately for them under $600.
The 6910 makes decent espresso and can steam milk simultaneously as they have an additional pump just for steaming.
They are easy to use and Sunbeam supply a free introductory course on how to use it.
The course is well worth taking according to all the feedback here.

Hi Thundergod - thanks for your detailed reply.

Well... the budget was originally $300, but I thought $400 would get us something decent. But then again if you get a course on how to use it.... that might make all the difference. We have gone through 3 stovetops in about 6 months... so perhaps the Sunbeam EM6910 would be a better investment!

SimonJ - I second TG. You will see a big jump in quality coffee with this set up over say a little thermoblock machine and a lesser quality grinder...it really is great value given the product in the cup that it produces.

        Cheers
