Re: What do you do when youre bored of HX machines?
whoa - this is reading like a comedy thread
not that thats a bad thing, but as i said in another thread,
VBM double boiler w/ pid hasnt seemed to eventuate,
Izzo-Alex Duetto II is more expensive than first thought and seems to have some QC issues/fit and finish
LaSpaziales are ugglleh (except the S1, which is impossible to find and nearly in GS/3 / Cyncra price bracket these days)
Minore III is expensive and better than the II but still potentially iffy etc.
...there doesnt seem to be a great option.

Design and make your own from two separate machines... :
Setup one boiler with PID Control for brewing and the other as a Steam Boiler. You could even retain the HX in the Steam Boiler as a means to preheat the Brew Boiler water. Only problem though would be finding a small enough boiler to use as a Brew Boiler/Heater. Probably only need something with a capacity of a litre or so...
Would make for an interesting project though 8-)

Focus on the coffee not the machine- thats where the action is.
Alternatively something like Mals suggestion is great- my Botticelli single boiler with PID will outgun a lot of things when youre wanting to sample different coffees youve roasted.

Re: What do you do when youre bored of HX machines?
dunno if chris or dennis at talkcoffee have any S1s left.
no PID, but an apparent ability to tune brew temp by 1deg increments and around your price mark (and prob just about halfway to a GS3).
no stock preinfusion either
but twin boiler and you dont need to lose a kidney

Thats about right.Originally posted by 0F222328322F323F460 link=1247713532/10#10 date=1247725259...there doesnt seem to be a great option
You could track down a dalla corte mini. I really havent used it enough to know if it is any good, but it is the only thing that seems to have anything remotely resembling a saturated group anywhere south of a GS3 ... although others have pointed out that there are potentially significant differences between the DC group and a saturated group. It also doesnt have a PID, but some other sort of temperature control.
If your aim is to improve your coffee quality, the best thing to do is to get better quality coffee. Over the past year or so, it seems to me that there has been an explosion in the high quality green coffee market in Australia, as a result of which high quality coffee is a lot easier to track down, though much of it comes with an increased price tag over the green prices that the Australian market has been used to.
If youre looking at spending on equipment, get a robur. You could also start tinkering around with your machine a bit more, noting that (a) it might void your warranty and (b) you could hurt yourself and your machine.
Cheers,
Luca
