Re: What do you do when youre bored of HX machines?

I dont roast my own at the moment - just because Im not yet convinced that Id be able to exceed the quality of the blends + beans I buy. Getting through about 1.5kg/week also would mean investing in a roaster capable of more than 150g, as I dont have time to roast every day, so it starts looking expensive. If anyone in Sydney wants to try to convince me otherwise I will very happily spend the day with them roasting, and pay for the beans we roast, and appreciate it lots.

I support telemasters comments above. Expresso Espresso machines can be beautiful and expensive - much like Golden Ear stereo systems. In the end - its about the music. With espresso machines / power amplifiers, the best you can hope for is that they stay out of the way and dont muck things up. I would love a Cyncra one day, but my ancient Ariete does fine, 2 shots out of 5.

If youre bored, theres a whole world of footling with blends, roasting profiles etc - very rewarding when you come up with something spectacular. Some audiophiles - all they can hear is the hum. They are missing out on the music

LaSpaziales are ugglleh (except the S1, which is impossible to find and nearly in GS/3 / Cyncra price bracket these days)
        uh? The S1 costs as a GS3 ?? :-?

Nar- I wouldnt say that. Unless under 50% of the cost of a GS/3 is considered to be the same price bracket :-?

sorry, price ref was to the Duetto. The ref. to the laspaz is the 53mm group and ugliness

I am surprised that no one has taken issue with the title of this thread...I mean seriously can anyone become bored with a good HX...perhaps if you have a palate of a world class espresso taster...how about getting into some home roasting with a Corretto (up to a kg on warm days with one heat gun and usually 800grams is easy even on colder days in SEQ)...and really having some fun.

              Cheers

perhaps I do, perhaps I dont

surprised no-one has said "perhaps its the grinder that should be upgraded first"

Didnt I say "get a robur"?

                    oh Luca,

youre such a bad influence on me. Im drinking CoE coffees.

big problem with the Robur is that theyre 50% more than the K10 WBC, though iwoot. had a play with hazels doserless BNZ conical, robur & k10, and while I preferred hazchems K10 (has a screw stopping the grind changing), the robur.........gah. they dont come up second hand

I had a play with the Kony-e yesterday. Grind time is circa 9 sec for a double (Robur-e <4 sec)...

I have ordered a black one for home to go with the GS/3 and will then move the K10WBC on..

...I had a play with the Kony-e yesterday....
I switched from a Rocky to a Kony about 16 months ago. Kind of like going from a bicycle to a Ford GT. Its a non-E, doser model (the Kony, not the Ford). One thing I can say is that it creates a grind that extracts more deeply than Rocky. To maintain a taste profile I prefer, I had to adjust my house blend, raising the percentage of my base, and deceasing the percentage of the accent origins. The Mazzer upper burr mounting system makes the Rocky look like a toy.

wow! thats a glowing endorsement - what made you decide it was better than the K10? Theyve got a rep for being slow, and lots of reviews seemed to indicate that they dont get the flavour profile that the big conicals do, but... I do know that the US market is very different to the AUS one.

In my book thats a good thing Coffeehorse!?!??!

Those "slow" accusations are likely to have come from people in the industry who use it at full capacity in a cafe or resturant. At home? slower is better... within reason of course.
Slower grind means less friction...less friction means less heat....hate leads to suffering OH sorry thats star wars!

Each to there own coffeehorse...if you have tried it and liked it...then buy it! OR hint to la familia that you want it for fathers day?!?!?!?

I dont think any grinder is going to get hot in a domestic environment, only a commercial environment where the grinder is constantly running.

                              But I could be wrong

I wasnt really referring to the internal temps due to over usage but thats a good point you make MM.

My comment was in regard more to the heat generated by friction on the burrs. Despite the fact they spend very little time being ground..it is still friction and therefor heat. Not a huge factor but i just thought i would throw my 2cs worth in ;D
