Hi all. Just wondering if anyone knows what the value would be of a san marino 2 group, in good working order...im guessing its about 6 years old, currently in a cafe doing 20kg per week.
i was going to suggest between 600 - 1200 for something OK, that would be the going rate on the "bay"
less for an old banger
maybe 1500 tops for something very nice like full stainless great condition, all pipes and extra groups etc
buying from somewhere you can see it running "might" be worth a few extra dollars as you can give it a good test. you then have an idea of any dramas that need attention.....
make sure your buying the pump / motor as well as some SMs (all?) are external pump machines.
i see that some have 2400-2600 watt elements and "could" be run on a 10amp power point but may be pushing your wiring.......
Hey 2mcm why are they considered "bad"?
They seem well built, using what looks like good quality parts.
surely good coffee can be made on them?
is it temp issues due to the type of group head arrangements?
you seem against them without saying why?
Ill back up what 2mcm said, Ive personally worked with one for three years in my early barista days and as far as I was concerned, it was the bane of my existence; But holy cow did it steam milk at incredible speeds and they are kind of built like a tank... I once pondered the thought of destroying our 3 group lisa with a sledgehammer, but I thought that it might end up hurting the hammer more.
Hi np, I have been watching the prices of SM 2 groups for the past couple of months on Eekbay, depending on age and condition have ranged from $1000 up to $2500, the expensive one had the stainless front, copper sides and black base, had new seals in groupheads and taps, had been recently serviced but age was unknown. The unit at $1000 had the faux woodgrain finish, and it seems with other sales that these are the least popular.
Hope this helps answer your particular question.
As to the other respondents, I think Id rather release a cooling flush on a tough as nails workhorse, than to curse every time something went wrong on my bling bling machine.
Im pretty happy with my beige kingswood thanks!!!
i was in manly (NSW) today and had a coffee from one (3grp)
coffee tasted burnt......
but they did have nice food and seemed genuinely interested in feedback, i think they are new owners to the shop.
I suggested they have there service guy check it out temp wise.... but i have NFI really.
this thread crossed my mind as soon as i tasted the coffee
I might have a 2gpr SM in the shed out the back, but i reckon no one from CS will want it now...... i dont really want it either now... and i have not even made coffee on it yet....lol
wonder if the OP bought the one they were looking at ;D

And give every customer a different and inconsistent experience.
where I work there is a cafe that use one of these. they are always consistent, and not all that bad coffee. I think because always the same person on teh machine, and always very busy so maybe that is how it is designed to work without overheating?
Poor old Lisa...............the poor cousin and ugly sister to the desirable Wega - born out of the same CMA factory - but cursed at birth.
You will continue to see a lot of SMs (particular the Lisas) recyled on FeeBay for years to come - there are heaps still in use around Oz, or sitting in garages collecting dust, tempting their owners to believe they have struck gold by wiping it down with a chux and claiming it was regularly serviced throughout its life and had its last service just a mere 3 months ago (I wish FeeBay sellers could be a little more creative instead of copying the same ad).
Reality is many of these machines have lived a tough life and your either going to come across one that has done its Braveheart tour of duty and worked like a trojan for 4 years and on its last legs or its been placed in one of those low volume accounts the roasters tend to forget about - just a few kilos per week, posted to the customer - never being cleaned/serviced and probably living near a deep fryer and having all sort of gunk fly into the cup warmer grill.
Just looking around Melb over the last 2 years, the number of new SMs installed seems to have dropped a fair bit - not sure about the rest of Oz.
One enterprising Melbourne-based roaster continues their strategy of taking these old and tired Lisas, sprays them different 2-pac colours and re-births them to unsuspecting cafe owners as "almost new" machines....charing top $$ for leasing.......pure gold.
