Re: Gas conversion for commercial coffee machine
Good morning Hobart
obviously I dont know what your set up is so on the basis of flying totally blind would like to offer the following food for thought.
It is unusual if not rare to find a 3 gp machine in a mobile coffee business due simply, to the power requirement (usually 24 amps for large capacity machine let alone anything else you are running). There are some 15 amp 3 group machines but I wouldnt give you tuppence for them...(would rather go a good 2 group 15 amp machine than a sub standard (my opinion) 15 amp 3 grouper)...and frankly you cant serve crowds that quickly (my opinion) that having the extra group would be of much value to you time wise....if they want it they will wait.
Instead of trying to re invent the wheel with a private gas conversion which could end up being an exoensive / dangerous / bodgy set up, I would convert down to a 2 group machine.
There you have a handful of possible options:
a) get your hands on a real factory supplied 2 group gas machine (rare as rocking horse poo but nevertheless...) I can order you one for my container leaving Italy @ end January.....
b) get a regular 2 group 15 amp machine;
c) get a regular 15 amp 2 gp machine with large boiler capacity and convert down to a 10 amp element...thereby slow recovery but large capacity to start;
d) get a factory 10 amp 2 group machine / usually a machine with a small boiler eg a "compact" model because this recovers quickly....but will also deplete quickly.
e) Insulate boiler for purpose of optimum electrical efficiency.
Buy a generator to suit.
Buy an inverter system (but that is kind of a non alternative due to large cost factor).
In a nutshell, I would ditch the 3 group machine and get something appropriate. Therefore you have to be prepared to spend some money. Not trying to be facetious, and apologies if I have gone off down the wrong track.
Hope this helps.

Re: Gas conversion for commercial coffee machine
Hi Mat,
Theres a mobile coffee van near Port Macquarie running off gas on an old La Pavoni Lever machine. Ive heard gas is more prevalent in NZ on the mobile coffee vans there, though their regulations may be quite different to Australias. Other than that, it doesnt seem to be that common. Perhaps because of regulations or the variables that come in to play when using gas.
Do you even know if the azkoyen has been designed to run off gas? If it can, I would approach a reseller of that type of machine. But keep in mind that like AM said, theres possibly a myriad of regulations about having a naked flame and bottled gas.

Agree..Originally posted by 457970687D1C0 link=1259622818/1#1 date=1259623051Morning Mat,
Would installing a 240V alternator be an easier and simpler alternative?
To go gas would be a full rebuild of teh machine and boiler etc... Let alone teh controlling cct.
You have naked flames to manage... It ant so simple as slotting in a burner and hooking up to a gas bottle... If ya went down teh old instantaneous path... You would have to flush ya group head and the water usage / consistency would be all over the place; without a proper control system..
Could it be done.. YEP...
Cost = High.
Ready made off the shelf kit = NO
Also issue with using Gas and licensing and mobility; would mean some strict certification to be met...
Generator system as per any number of coffee vans would be easer to manage and maintain..
