  • Brew group pressure for rotary pump

    Hi guys,
    I have a rotary pump machine and the brew group guage on the machine shows a brew group pressure around 9.5 bar.

    Once I put a portfilter guage on it, the pressure just rose and rose to 10.5 bar.

    I have turned the pressure down, but now I get poor crema.

    All the searching on the web tells me that static presure is different to dynamic presure readings.........Is this true, and which guage should I believe?

    Should I just rely on the guage on my machine and be done with it?
    Can there be that much difference between the two readings?

    Any advice welcome.

    Probably should have left it as is mate.... :

    While pouring a shot, that 10.5Bar probably falls down to an ideal 9Bar - Exactly where it should be.... 8-)

      Yep Mal is right. The only Gauge you should be going by is the taste and if the Crema is worse now that is a good indicator.

      Dont worry so much about the numbers and worry more about what is in the cup.

      The gauges in coffee machines are not million dollar super accurate items. Stick to what tastes best and enjoy

        but he used a pf guage....wouldnt that reading be fairly close?

          That was my initial impression Roknee, but I think Mal and Barrel might be right.
          Taste is the best test, so I think I need to go back to my old pressure reading.

            Yes,

            Realise that a PF/Group Handle Gauge was used but when you measure the pressure against a Closed Head (Blind Filter), the pressure will be higher than when a controlled flow at the normal rate of extraction is used.

            In all probability, the pressure was established originally with either a Scace Device or something very similar to it (Greg Pullmans device for example). When ever youre establishing a set pressure on an espresso machine, you must make sure to replicate normal operating conditions when doing so, otherwise the end result will be different...
