  • Help me choose a new Machine!

Its time for a new machine but due to to analysis paralysis I cant pull the trigger on anaything.
Been working in hospitality it seems forever and have played with lots of the commercial offerings.
But getting something for home is killing me,there is something about parting with your own folding that pains me.
I like to buy things only once and Im also terrible with buyers remorse :-[

Obviously it has to able to do a great coffee, both espresso and milk.
Looking more than likely for a manual unit.
Style is important but not the last word.
Budget $3k-ish but may stretch marginally further if there is good reason.

Ill worry about suitable grinder once the brewing unit has been selected.

    Hi Jdub -

Is your $3k budget just for the machine?  If it is you are well and truly into the bling spectrum...so I suggest you get in touch with a local sponsor and check things out in person.  Some sponsors have good websites which list all their machines with piccies.

Whilst I dont own either brand, it seems to me after lots of reading on this site that Izzo and Diadema are the most highly rated brands at this price level, and seem to have both the bling factor and the quality factor.

Hopefully that gives you a starting point...

    Cheers

    Sniff

      Okie dokie......

      take a look at:
      http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1163932646

Does not of course include the grinder...but for a suitable adjustment in price maybe you will also make me replace my cupping grinder ;D ;D ;D....

Was saving it for our next OPEN DAY in June, but if someone snaps it up before than that is ok too......

      Regardz,
      Attilio
      very first CS site sponsor.

PS also have our Alex Duetto II PID machine demod to the tune of maybe 50 coffees only and going for a "nice price".....

Both are excellent machines Sniff, but you do have to take into account that there are a host of opinions as to what might be best and these opinions are all too frequently tainted by ownership.

The "best" machine is the one that best meets your requirements within a given budget and possesses few charateristics which you dislike and no dealbreaker characteristics. Ultimately, there is no best.

The right way to choose a machine is to discuss pros and cons and any shortcomings of a machine. More likely than not, you may not have even considered the cons of a particular machine and this removes it from your list of candidates.

There is no perfect machine be it Sunbeam or GS/3 and we need to remain mindful of that as vendors and purchasers.

Yes, I do apologise! Giottos are also held in high esteem, and definitely have the bling factor!

                  Yes it is Sniff.

Thanks for shortlisting them guys and all the responses so far,I really appreciate it.
I was wondering when the Giotto was going to get a mention aswell and I am wondering how it compares to the rest.
The Expobar Minore 4 is also on the radar so Im wondering how that compares to the rest?
But I will have to go and have a closer squizz at the other recomendations.

Oh any thoughts on the Vibemme Domo Super Bar units?

                  Thanks again!

Have not used one but do own the Junior version which I love. From what I can tell the extra money gets your a bigger boiler, bigger drip tray and bigger water tank. Also has the option of a plumb-in but I dont know if this is extra $$. Another $500 gets you volumetric control.

Beautiful looking machine but cant say Ive ever found myself wanting/needing the extra features the Super offers over the Junior.

For that money Id be looking at the Alex Duetto II.

Not to put a dampener on your shopping process, but the grinder is usually seen as more important than the machine. You can make a good coffee with a good grinder and an ordinary machine, but youll struggle the other way around.

                        Gotta agree there.

                        I went from:
                        EM6910 with EM4080 grinder to
EM6910 with Mazer Mini Grider to
Rocket Giotto Premium Plus with Mini Mazer.

The bigest leap in quality in the cup was the addition of the Mini Mazer!

The Giotto is a great machine it has to be said. It needs a good long cooling pour if left for a long time, but after that delivers a great shot one after another for a dozen and more times. And the steaming is extraordinarilly fast - I still have to learn to tame that beast.

                          Hi JayBee,

The cooling flush issue on the Giotto Premium can be fixed with a thermostability upgrade. Any sponsor proficient with a Scace or Scace 2 should be able to make a big difference. The Giotto Premium Plus addressed this and a made a few other improvements over the Premium.

Thanks Chris; mine is the Premium Pluss so I figure it is my habbit of leaving the machine on for a couple of hours before I brew that lets it get a tad hot to begin with. A 20 second flush with an empty basket seems to bring it back in line again

I 100% agree with you with regards with the grinder.
At the moment I do have an old Cunill on hand, but it will be upgraded when I do get a new machine.
A Kony is on the radar atm,but I will entertain any other recommendations with that aswell when the time comes.
