  • Project Cimbali M28 4GR (and saying hi)

    Howdy all,

Ive been lurking on these boards for quite a while and decided to finally register, and say a thanks to all the info Ive learned from you guys so far.

My current setup is a La Spaziale Professional coupled with a La Cimbali Cadet grinder. After following a few guides from around the web, as well as a few other tidbits of info from here and there Im quite happy with the results Ive been getting.

So, the other day I figured I would put a bid on an auction for a La Cimbali M28 Selectron. Its a 4 group machine which has been sitting idle for a few years, and is currently in the process of being torn down for a clean. Unfortunately its far too big for home use, but figured this would be a fun project, and a bargain at the price I paid for it.

Does anyone have much experience with these really big machines? The wiring diagrams on the left side panel dont match the current configuration of the switch at all. The guy I bought it off said it was wired for single phase, but doesnt really look that way. I have a few options to wire it up, disconnecting two of the boiler element connections, wiring up a 3 way 40a 3 phase plug (or IEC60309 server plug), or even wire up to a circuit breaker in its own box (which seems the easiest).

I downloaded the M27 manual that was located in Borats rebuild thread, but there are a couple things that arent covered in the manual.
    - There doesnt seem to be any specific drain location on my machine. There is a black box just under the water level sight glass (Im guessing the nut on the bottom of this is boiler drain point also?)
    - to prime the pump I use the knob on the right bottom (pull out and push up and down?) Do I have to watch for water somewhere to know when the air is out of the line? (How do you know when its primed?)

Well thats pretty much everything I can think of. I will try to post some photos up soon

    Cheers,

    Kris

Hi Kris, I know zip about commercial machines and cant help you with your questions but would just like to pass on "welcome to CS" anyway. Images are always good.

    Steve.

That nut is the boiler drain plug.

That is the manual fill lever, not a priming lever/valve. With that said you can use it to purge the air from the line after plumbing the machine in, but that doesnt prime the pump as the manual fill valve by-passes the pump.

When you see water appearing in the boiler sight glass youll know theres no air in the line.

Because these machines are plumbed in they require no priming as the line pressure takes care of that.

why do you say its 3phase? if youre referring to the three prongs on the element, they might all be 240v, just look at whats stamped on the element. Although being such a big machine, it might be 3phase.

A lot of bigger commercial machines are built to be used as either a single phase or three phase machine, and require a bit of reconnection to swap between setups. Most machines that have this option will have a sticker inside that shows how to connect them for each power option, sometimes you need the manual for this info.

Unfortunately in the 300+MB worth of manuals I have on my computer I havent got any Cimbali ones.

Was this the eBay machine that came from a Football Club? It seems to be rated at 240V, by the looks of it it would require a 32 Amp supply (or more!) so could well look like its set up for 3 phase as proper 32 Amp power plugs look the same as most 3 phase plugs, but with only 3 pins.

Hi Guys, thanks for the help so far.

The current wiring of the machine doesnt appear to match up to any of the configurations supplied on the left side panel.

This was the ebay machine from the footy club, luckily I was moving house the same day I needed to pick it up, so having the hydraulic lift trailer was a bonus as it is mind blowing how heavy it is.

According to the spec sticker it is 8.4 kw, but Im assuming the boiler itself is 5.7 kw as it appears to look the same as a drawing I saw on one of the machine part catalogues.

Well Ive nearly scrubbed off 2 years of scum and neglect and identified all the seals that need replacing and it will be up for sale again, as its just too big and power hungry to keep, but will hopefully get me closer to getting a Vivaldi S1, or a Cimbali Junior D. Mmmmm now that is a sexy beast.

            Thanks again guys,

            Kris
