Thanks Mal. Would hate to have had it restored by a machine tech. The bill would have been $$$$. Well worth the effort to restore machines. You get to learn a lot about how different machines are made, what makes them different and you pick up a lot of new tools along the way. :

My rocky is my cupping/plunger/syphon grinder. The K10 is my barista comp grinder. Ive had a fair few grinders for home...Mazzer Mini, Sunbeam, La Cimbali, Compak K10 modified to be WBC spec and few more. I buy things, use them for a bit and then sell them. ;D That said, Im happy with my current grinders. They do the job well.

Its a joy to behold David, you must be chuffed mate..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

And that WBC K10 looks just perfect next to the Brugnetti, Rocky looks a little lonely and forlorn though

    Mal.

Today, I got a few different coffees and pulled my first shots of the machine. Im actually impressed by the standard of coffee I can produce from this machine.  8-)

    Photo 1: Machine and grinder.
Photo 2: Very first espresso pour. I didnt even have to adjust the grinder!
Photo 3: Resulting espresso. Nice red brown crema.
Photo 4: My chaser after the espresso. Milk needs a lot of work! The steam is huge, even more than a dual boiler commercial. I am planning to change the steam arm to a BFC when I can chop down the springs.

The coffee? An Australian Barista Championships blend....still fresh at 8 days old. Very bold acidity and medium body. I cant say much more than that. The high acidity is probably due to freshness though. Blended for the Nuova Simonelli which runs super hot when flushed for longer than 3 seconds.

She has a beasty 7L boiler and frankly has steam power greater than a Marzocco.

For Roknee....you can bring your machine to my house anytime Mine is too heavy to lift. Its like 60 kg with water in the boiler...

Photo 1: Here is how I plumbed in my machine from a tank

Photo 2: Machine set up, minus Compak K10 WBC which is out on loan. The Rocky is my black coffee grinder.

She has a beasty 7L boiler and frankly has steam power greater than a Marzocco. Taming this beast and temp surfing will be a lot of fun.  Cheesy Tried to add a thermocouple or temp probe o the group head some how, but all the blanking caps on the group head doesnt lead to any water. Guess I will just need to Scace this puppy.

finished rebuilding my single group de 40.7 today.

There wasnt much to do really. The machine was fairly clean.

Full descale of boiler, pipes and group head using Cafetto technicians descaler which I took from the workshop at work. Surprisingly not much scale for such an old machine (1994 build year).

Replace o-rings and boiler gaskets. Shower screen and group seal. New steam wand. Kept the current assembly.

"Plumbed in" via a jerry can using a Shurflo 3901 pressure water pump in to a Aqualife Quattro water filter and 350 kPa PLV. Procon pump was in good nick so I was lucky there.

Tweaked the p-stat to 1.1 bar. On at 1 bar off at 1.1 bar. Too much steam for me to handle. And Im used to massive machines, this thing just cranks steam. Its okay....I can steam milk for 2 lattes in 5 seconds flat   I should scace this puppy to see what the water temp is at the group.

No coffee to try yet. But the machine looks like it can deliver a nice full bodied espresso from the 5 week old coffee I found in my cupboards. Heres to hoping.

Reading this thread brings a smile of recognition to my face.

Over 6 months ago I acquired a single group DE40.7. It took me 2 weeks to disassemble the bugger. Some of the bolts are pretty corroded on boiler cap, the 2 screws holding the boiler to the frame of the machine were buggered and had to be drilled out, the scale thank god was not that bad. 3 nights of descaling and scrubbing with a wire brush got it all clean. The group head screw was a bugger to get it....I ended up tearing off the shower screen with pliers and to my pleasant surprise I could wiggle the screw loose. The machine laid in 1 million pieces for over half a year until this week. Its 90% back together in one nights work.

All I need now is a group head to boiler gasket and o-ring, shower screen and group seal, a 12v dc pump to pump water from a reservoir to a water filter and a 1 way valve to stop the water leaking out of the machine.

I wish I read this thread a long time ago. Going to add some strip lighting under the machine near the group so I can see what Im doing....haha. Now I have something to go with my lonely Compak WBC K10 at home!

Segrave, how did you end up with the restoration mate?

    Dave
