Whether to turn home machines on and off or leave on all the time
Re: Whether to turn home machines on and off or leave on all the time
Hi Ozscott
Thats a very interesting idea. Ill do the search as you recommend and check it out.
So basically because the boiler retains its heat longer the pressurestat wouldnt be turning on as often which reduces electricity costs as well as lengthening the life of the pressurestat since its not switching on and off as often.

Hi mate - be happy too. I got the idea from site Mod and resident roasting guru Mal. I then adopted Paolos idea on lagging (just do a search for a post from him re lagging) and purchased some Armaflex HT from him. Unless you remove all the pipes its an interesting job...but well worth it. Basically you wrap up the boiler in high temp self-extinguishing insulation (lagging) and it retains the heat much better than when uninsulated.

Hi ozscott
Ive seen a couple of references in this topic about "lagging the boiler" and it seems that it saves on electricity costs and maybe allows faster heating of the boiler. Ive got a Cimbali Junior S (tanked). Can you please explain what "lagging" is, what are its benefits and how you do it?
Re: Whether to turn home machines on and off or leave on all the time
Mate - good to hear about the machine. We use the hot water wand a lot as well - teas, veges etc.
I still use the Sunbeam at work, but at home the FAEMA is the weapon of choice - its on most days all day (been turning her off at night lately since I lagged the boiler - only takes 10 mins to boil in the morning then - not too shabby for 11 litres).
Gotta love the commercial machines mate. I love how cheap the bits are too...pressurestat diaphragms, group seals, steam wands seals etc are good examples.
Funny how you get used to a 4 hole tip with massive steam power and can tame it into microfoam...the Sunbeam at work is tedious in that regard...

Hello GCM58,
Other complications can occur if the machine is a "plumb in" connection. Sooner or later, might take 15 years, but sooner or later your flexible inlet water pipe (or a plastic water filter housing) will burst and flood your house, and you arent there to do anything about it if the machine is left on all the time. When you eventually discover it, you have lost the entire floor coverings in the house.
This has happened to me 3 times, twice in business and once at home. I lost the entire floor coverings in my home because when they dried...they shrank.
I now always turn my machines off at the end of the day or session, and I also turn off the water at the tap for plumb in machines.
Hope this helps,
Attilio

Attilio, I read you saying this a few years back. You must be very unlucky in this respect.
For my own experience, I have just replaced my 23-year-old dishwasher (control switch problem), but otherwise hoses never leaked a drop in that time.
My washing machine was replaced after more than 20 years, and hoses never failed.

Ive hard wired the active to the boiler element and am only switching the neutral. This is just to keep it going. I was going to buy another pressurestat but after seeing how they operate and are built I think will put a SSR in.
This is both illegal and unsafe bassway....
Much better all around to switch the Active and hard-wire the Neutral....
Boy oh boy..... BAD Bassway...... You need to pay pennance to Mal and me ASAP.... [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
The reason is that one should always dissconnect... However if one does not... But the switch is off... One may expect to be working on things that are not live... The switch provides the return path.. If the active is not switched... Then any contuctor... Including said user or person working on it can become the return path...
Some may even suggest this is a MAN trap... Also ilegal....
Old systems only switched Activge... But do to 10D!T users all switched to day.... SHOULD be wired to switch Active and Nuteral.... It is a practice that should be followed...
NOTE: In the event of a problem... Insurance and other legal matter would be directed at YOU...
