Re: Need help choosing the right machine

I would like to ask you guys about a choice between Vibiemme Domobar Super Manual Lever with Stainless Steel side panels or Rocket Espresso Giotto Premium Plus. Also the choice between two grinders, Mazzer Super Jolly automatic and Anfim Best Grinder. Do you know goods and cons? Is having a cup warmer important? Do I have to wait a long time for these machines to warm up?

    Thanks guys

Machines like this need a good 1/2 hour to warm up (can be reduced to 1/4 if a tea towel is draped over the group). Dont have experience with the machines but out of the grinders Id take the super jolly. Quicker and stepless but it does have a messy doser (this can be fixed with an elvinator -google it) and you need to install little pieces of card under the dosing star to make it sweep cleaner.

Damn! half an hour? Is there any good Italian machine that warm up pretty quick and perform well?

Re: Need help choosing the right machine

          Hi again DRIV3R

Both the VBM and GPP make superb coffee. The stainless VBM also hasa stainless chassis while the new GPP is now powdercoated. Both have cup warming trays that are more than adequate. The VBMs is a little larger though you need to remove the entire tray to access the water tank. The GPP is a little more accessible. The componentry in the VBM is slightly less of a commercial standard than the GPP in my opinion, though as far as operation goes, seems to e irrelevant. The GPP is more forgiving for a new user while the VBM has more oomph.

So Ive probably only added to the confusion regarding choice. However, one of these will feel right for you and so dont be surprised if the machine will choose you rather than the other way around.

Both machines take the same time to warm up (about 20 minutes minimum). Some people use a timer switch to wake up the machine before they do.

In regard to the choice of grinder, the Jolly would be my personal preference over the Anfim. It grinds well, is quick, reliable, and unless youre serving a crowd, the auto-grind feature shouldnt need to come into play.

          Cheers!

Thanks Dennis. So once I turn these machines on, do you have to turn it back off after you made the coffee or can you leave it on whole day and just turn it off when going to bed? do they have some sort of automatic thermostat?

x2 for the Super Jolly. I personally wouldnt get the automatic for home use. Its extra gear inside the dozer that your not going to use just making it hard to clean. If you can, get a timer or a full manual. Imo a timer would come in handy if you were in a cafe but the manual will be fine for home use, I dont really think its worth the extra coin.

I run my ECM on a timer and leave it on for as long as I expect to need coffee. It is plumbed in so there is no danger of running it out of water while I am not watching it. This means on week days, it is only on for about an hour as I will not be home the rest of the day. On weekends, it is on all day and is darn handy for the quick shot as I am walking by. Sometimes I will turn it on at night for the occasional hot chocolate etc. but once it is on, I will leave it on for hours and sometimes for days on end.

I second the SJ as a grinder. I have 2 of them. A timer model that does the work for decaf and a automatic model (with the auto guts removed as they were a PITA to clean around and I dont use the grinder that way at home) that is for regular espresso .

Yes once they are on they can stay on for as long as you like. They do have an automatic pressurestat that keeps the boiler at a constant temperature.

Basically you can walk up to them any time of the day give them a quick flush of water and you are away.

Will they use much electricity while idling?

probbably not much different to having a superauto idling all day.

I dont know about how much coal is used but I monitored the electric usage on my machine and using the timer like I outlined above, I use about half the electric power as leaving it on 24/7. I guess it all depends on how much you use your machine through out the day

                            Slightly OT:

If you are really concerned (particularly with a big commercial boiler) you might want to think about insulating the boiler (sometimes called lagging on this board). It has shown to reduce the power usage from 25-50%. The only downside (that I can think of) is the cup warming tray will become useless. I think (if my memory is correct) people were working out a 2 group (Think 10L + boiler with 2500+ watt element) cost aprox $1 a day to leave on 24/7. With that in mind it wouldnt take too long (in the life of the machine) for the savings to outweigh the expenditure.

However you want to be careful not to insulate any pipes coming into/out of the boiler as this would change the thermal properties of the machine.

Guys, I need some help with Mazzer. For my home use, which one is better, Super Jolly or Mini Electronic?

                              Here are the specs:

                              Mini:

                              Solid cast body
                              Stepless grind adjustment
                              Power: 250 watts
                              Grinding burrs: flat 64mm
                              Burr speed: 1400rpm
                              Hopper capacity: 600g
                              Colours: Black, Silver
                              Weight: 9kg
                              Dimensions: 158w x 355d x 460h
                              Price: $1290

                              Super Jolly:

                              Solid cast body
                              Stepless grind adjustment
                              Power: 350 watts
                              Grinding burrs: flat 64mm
                              Burr speed: 1400rpm
                              Hopper capacity: 1.2kg
                              Colours: Black, Silver
                              Net Weight: 14kg
                              Dimensions: 240w x 420d x 600h
                              Price: $1188

In my view of the specs and from performance point of view, they are both identical except the mini is well, mini (in size). So if thats correct, I rather to have the smaller one for its weight and size so the question is, howmany double shots can I get outta 600 grams?

Or you recken mini is not as good as super jolly?

Also could you list the rest of equipments I need rather than the machine and grinder?

                              Thanks guys

Super Jolly is a better grinder
It has all to do with the way the burrs are held together
And on your price quoted its cheaper

Now you have to choose doser or doser-less
