Might be best to go with a Whole of House solution then.
More expensive initially but if it saves you having to repeatedly replace electronic components, then it's cheap insurance...

Unfortunately the GPO the machine is plugged into is a quad and I haven’t found a surge protected one yet.

The new PID and brew boiler thermocouple are installed and it seems I’ve cured the problem. I will be 100% sure when the machine has been allowed to idle for 30 minutes or so. Thanks again to Chris @ TC; I prefer the white LEDs too.

There's a few options out there. Some have replaceable surge units on case they get used up. Best practice is to have the whole house on a larger surge diverter and then each piece of critical equipment on a smaller local one. Different size surge diverters work for different size surges.

Could be as I don’t have any surge protection on the machine. Might have to look into it but I don’t really want to use a power board.

Chris from TC is sending me a new PID and thermocouple so I’ll start there. Could be the SSR but I need to fix the PID first to eliminate that. It’s hard to tell but I think I have an error A1 showing, hence the new temp probe for the brew boiler.

Out of interest, do you have a decent quality surge suppression power board feeding your espresso gear?
Could be some nasty spikes sneaking through and playing havoc with the various control systems...

I’ve sent a message directly to Izzo themselves so I’ll see what they come back with; no doubt they will direct me to Casa Espresso too. Today the brew boiler temperature went through the roof and I had steam coming out of the brew head. No coffee for me today... I will start with replacing the PID and go from there because I can’t read it to see what is happening at the moment.

Mine have failed for the second time; to the point where I can't read them at all. Something weird happened today too, after preparing my morning latte and deciding to have another there was no steam, and the steam boiler light had stopped coming on. I shut everything down and turned the machine on again and this time there was no brew boiler either Off with the top, a bit of poking around and hey presto, everything is back again. Any ideas anyone? I'll monitor and see if it happens again.

Back to the PID. Its possible to add the shot timer function to the Duetto II apparently. Since I need to replace the PID again, I'm considering making the mod if I can find the parts. Has anyone done this? There's a link here https://www.home-barista.com/repairs...er-t56654.html which details the process and the parts required, although in this case the poster used the PID from an ECM Synchronica. If anyone knows where I can get the parts please let me know as I searched the sites he referenced and found nada. Does Chris form TC still lurk around these threads?

Mine is just under 10 years old and it's still going strong, it will probably be pumping out great espresso in another 10 years time.

Interested to hear from Duetto II owners about the longevity of this machine if they're still running it.

I'm getting a second hand model and getting it fully checked over by a service technician before purchasing but keen to know if there are any specific issues I should be aware of
If there were major issues with them, it would be all over the internet. No doubt your searches have reinforced that those who purchase them have a good time.

With 2nd hand, who knows? It could be great or it could be rooted. It will depend on what sort of life its ownership team have dealt it. If there's no service invoices to be seen, you will need to do your own due diligence and price accordingly.
