    Form follows function,
taken together with Chriss comments shouldnt that read "porn follows function"...

Jon what a fantastic set up. That machine bespeaks a fantastic espresso heritage and will wow every person who walks in the room and I think the joy to the owner is something that would never dwindle.

Whilst my Due is a volumetric machine but with manual brew option and whilst it is from a different era and does not have the 61 groups the softness referred to above in Chriss post resonated for me with my machine. It seems that faema machines (commercial) have a consistent theme that makes the product eminently quaffable in large quantities. I suspect that the Robur combined with the e61producers floral notes that my setup does not butt I absolutely love the soft chocolate and malt notes that my Faema puts out day after day and I must admit to generally being underwhelmed when consuming coffees anywhere else in Brisbane.

I cannot see that either give up my Faema due, but if I did I simply couldnt go past the e-61 legendthat is now resplendent in your kitchen.

Whilst I enjoy reading most of the threads on the coffee snobs website I dont think that I have been as visually stimulated as I have by your photographs from long long time. Congratulations once again and please dont forget to post up some close-up porn/pour photographsas soon as you can.

    Cheers

OK - this is actually Jon writing from my brother-in-laws log-in!!

Exactly right. Chris was also spot-on; I really wanted a solid, plumbed in commercial machine. Coming from the VBM which I had for a few years I felt my technique was good, but I was looking for something that firstly made very good coffee, was a manual machine, and that also had a bit of style, class, and even perhaps history! I earbashed poor Chris on a trip to Melbourne about choices of smaller machines, and then realised I wanted the convenience of having a plumbed machine, and at the same time fell in love with his E-61 cos it just looked so damn good!! (as well as filling all the other criteria too). Then of course poor Dennis copped it - the Elektra is another quality machine that has great style too. The Faema won because it was manual, its history, (the connection with Chris machine is wonderful - no its not an original, but if you were going to bother reproducing something then this is it!), and again cos Im a sucker for this retro look. In short, this was a machine I was confident I could use to its potential, as well as making a bit of a statement with its looks, and rely on it to be an easy using, no-fuss machine for that all important first few heart-starters in the morning before going to work.

Im absolutely stoked with it - I cant handle the Linea look (yep, more snobbery) because I think so many modern machines are really quite boring; after all, are there really that many people here who DONT feel that part of the whole coffee appreciation thing also includes the machines that produce the products of (my) addiction?? Form follows function, and this machine fulfilled both parts of this equation beautifully.

More to come later - Ill take some shots to show the flow, etc... and add some review bits too.

    Jon

I must admit that I was left scratching my head and a bit confuziid when you mentioned contrived and tacky, as I thought it was the same machine but with just one group. I just had a second look and the penny dropped. I noticed all the extra buttons and the word "automatic". Wonder why they changed the spec? Why not just make the same machine but with just single group for users that do not need 2?

I guess... I further assume that even if it was a semi auto with just one group and otherwise similar internally its still quite "different" in appearance to what was released so many years ago.... More like a mini-me Faema Legend....

WoW, what a setup. Congratulations . Just out of curiousity why not the E61 Jubilé A?
I think I can answer that Buschy....

Jons brief was that he wanted retro/funky, usability, 2 groups and true to the original. Most important was the result in the cup.

My original e-61 (1965) doesnt think for itself- no control board, no auto-fill, had the original mercury switch (now pressurestat until I restore the switch), no anti-vac and its not the type of machine I would ever leave unattended.

Jon fell in love with my machine and the e-61 legend provided a new machine which was user friendly after Scace calibration and with modified steam tip. Matched with his Robur-e, it punches well above its weight.

For mine, the Jubilé A is contrived and tacky. Its definitely not true to original and I wouldnt want one- but thats just my personal opinion

We think we met Jons brief well- and the most important thing is that we have a very happy client who owns a beautiful piece of functional design.

Now theres some pure coffee porn for you! 8-)

Jon, it looks fantastic and I am thrilled that its running well. Its going to look amazing once the kitchens all done...

The Faema e-61 really does produce an amazing shot. Softness, clarity, no premature blonding and I envy the variable thermosyphon restrictors on yours. Wish I had some for mine. I often reckon I get better shots from my old 65 e-61 than I do from the GS/3.

Matched with the Robur-e, you have nowhere to go and I cant see that the upgraditis bug can bite again.

Must be time to buy a roaster eh? :-? ;D
