      Re: La Dorio

So I took a bag full of porterfilters over to the shed on the weekend and discovered that the best fit is a Bezzera mini bar PF. Its not a perfect fit, it doesnt lock in as far as I would like, but I am pretty sure it is sealing as it is. Once things progress a little more and I have new seals in place I will worry about getting PFs and fitting them properly. I plan on filling the boiler and plugging it in next weekend. I had planned on doing more this saturday, but a heap of people showed up to see the Rancilio and I ended up pulling about 30 shots and just hanging out instead of getting the last panels of the Dorio.

        Re: La Dorio

I plucked up the courage to plug the beast in over the weekend. fortunately I didnt black out the neighbourhood or electricute myself. The element fired up, the boiler held pressure. That was about all i could test because i dont have a pump to see if the brew switches / groups work. Also the boiler pressure guage is cactus, so I wasnt able to tell if the old pressurestat works. After i got hot and started steaming, we powered it down.
Pip on the board has offered me a Mercury switch pressurestat (thanks a lot man), so all I have to do is work out how to collect it from Brunswick and get it up to Sydney. Anyone coming up to sydney from melbourne willing to carry them for me? I can offer coffees and pastrys upon delivery.

Im not certain but I think you cant fly with mercury. I heard it can disolve the aluminium that aircraft are made of.

I can get it as far as canberra in about four weeks. Let me know if you dont get someone to drive it all the way.

            Yep,

Mercury dissolves Al and forms an Aluminium Amalgam. Heres a short video...

nice.... I might have to take you up on the canberra offer - I have some friends who live in Canberra who could take it the last leg up to sydney.

                Re: La Dorio

Well time to revive this thread. I was thrown out of my old shed and have taken some time to find myself another work space. In that time I have managed to scrounge some parts to get this project moving along again.
I have a mercury pressurestat that I picked up from Melbourne snob Pip, a new pressure gauge that I got cheap in the US, a pump from an old Carimali I picked up on ebay, and hopefully a couple of bezzera PFs in the post from snob Galumay (I cant thank you enough for your generosity mate).
So, thats the good news, unfortunately I think the boiler may have a crack that has been filled with some kind of high temp bog, its really hard to tell at this stage, but once I get it out and scrubbed I will have a better idea. Also it appears that the whole front face above the groups is a later add on. I am planning to remove this and expose the groups.

                  Re: La Dorio

Groups are off and what a weird looking group they are.
Once you remove the brass dome nut on top of the group there is another nut which when loosened causes a spring inside the group to push what looks like a piston from a lever machine out of the centre of the group.

                    Re: La Dorio

There are two little ports between the two orings that connect up to the water dispersion ports behind the shower screen. Other than the ports being blocked and all the seals being broken and hard as a rock, everything looks pretty good in there. There was loads of scale so its currently sitting in a citric acid bath.
I would be very interested if anyone has any information or theories about this group, anyone else seen them before?

I also picked up a brand new procon pump and motor which I am hoping I can fit inside the bodywork somewhere, to make it a neater unit.

horrific boiler scale where the group joins the boiler

Mal, if you happen to read this, can you remove your aluminium eating mercury video from this thread, its not that I dont appreciate your input, but the youtube link pops up and stops me from seeing half the posts.
                        cheers

weird, weird, weird. A solenoid valve and a spring! Any idea how they work together Aaron?

                            Re: La Dorio

Actually, Im guessing the spring piston act as a pre-infusion of sorts, letting the pump pressure rise slowly as the spring compresses, and taper off again when the shot is stopped.

I would advise against unlocking the group handle straight away after brewing when you test this machine

                              Re: La Dorio

I think the spring is just for pushing the insert out to change the seals as it screws in tight against the group, so there is no possibility of movement once its all assembled.

Hmm I was hoping the spring might have a more interesting function. You sure that the brass piston should not move in relation to the central shaft? It could be acting as a guide pin and is just seized.

The Coffee Man may be able to advise as Im guessing hes seen a few La Dorios.
