Re: My new Izzo Pompeii Single Group Lever.....

the coffee is extracted as the lever is pushed up from the bottom by a spring, its only la pavoni home lever machines that you have to use your own muscle to extract coffee :P

Re: My new Izzo Pompeii Single Group Lever.....

The machine looks great galumay - congratulations!

Trentski, there are two basic types of lever machine - direct and spring. Direct levers at rest usually have the lever at bottom, you then lift to charge the piston chamber then apply downward pressure.

Spring loaded requires the operator to stretch the spring by applying downward pressure and the lever locks in place. This action also allows water to enter the chamber from the build up of steam pressure in the boiler, commonly around 1 bar. Releasing the lever initially applies 9 bar of pressure and reduced pressure as the spring relaxes; temperature variation also occurs during the process, today known as pressure profiling.

Control of both lever types is possible throughout the process, adding further complexity to the possible outcomes.

Apologies to have taken this OT. Happy to discuss further in a separate thread.

yes, to clarify, the lever is pulled all the way down and left in that position for 10 secs and then you lift the lever up until the spring takes over and let it gently rise until it reaches the top resting position again.

          Hi galumay,

I am thrilled that you are happy with your machine and very relieved it survived the loooooong road trip in one piece

You have the #2 Pompeii in Australia and the only red one.

Enjoy the many godshots which seem to come with relative ease on what is close to the definitive lever for mine.  8-)

          Happy times!

          Chris

...and thats one of the initial impressions - consistent, very high quality shots with relative ease. Sal has become confident with it in the space of a few pulls - it took her a lot longer with the Bezzera BZ35, which is not a difficult HX to great shots out of.

Silence and cleanliness are the other 2 obvious distinctions, no pump so no noise, the nature of the pre-infusion combined with the very deep baskets makes for no mess, nothing seems to get retained up in the group head or around the seal, a quick flush after a pour is all that appears to be required.

I have seen comments about the delay between shots because if the portafilter is removed too soon after a pour then it can sneeze grounds out, with my slow pace of coffee making I havent found it restricts my ability at all, by the time I am ready to pour the next coffee its right to remove the PF and bang out the puck. - I made about 10 espressos in a row with no problem the other night.

The only thing i will have to change is the steam tip, it must be designed for streching 20lt buckets of milk. It nearly blows my little milk jug into tomorrow!

ps. Thanks again Chris for your guidance & support thru the process, I highly recommend Chris if you are looking to invest this sort of money in a machine!

                  Erm- yeah.

I had forgotten I had changed mine for a 2 hold Giotto tip which makes for a much nicer result and is still super quick.

Ill add one to the repair manual DVD which is still on the "to do" list

Seeing as weve gone so far OT from the OP Ill split this discussion on naked portafilters off and put it in the Brewing Equipment (non-machine specific) forum in its own thread.

What a beautiful machine, and the bokeh on the nectar!.jpg is the same! (I had to sneak a peek on the exif data to see what camera you used - I am super jealous!)

Was the shot shown produced with the Pharos grinder?

Yes, I tend to use the Pharos when I am just making espresso for myself, if i am making milk drinks or more than one I use the San Marco.

ps if you want a look at some more pics from the X100, http://galumay.smugmug.com/x100

                              Hi galumay,
                              Beautiful machine.
It is the solution to those who want a Lever and temp control.
With the PID, you have the bonus of having the same sort of temp control as a twin boiler PID (eg Alex Duetto II), as well as the benefits of a lever. What  more can you ask for?

Are you able to provide dimensions of your unit?

                              Thanks for the information.
